Description So I’m part of this club, .
Its purpose is to help people in their art. And what is one of the best ways to help people? My beloved tutorials, of course! Plus our club founder and director asked all the mentors to contribute a tutorial if possible.

Now, I know I’m not the best artist, and thus was my dilemma. What could I contribute that hasn’t already been done to death? Then I remembered one of the very first lessons in my architecture drawing class: Line-Weights.

Line-Weights are very important to an architect because they provide a hierarchy within the drawing that expresses so much more than just the straights and curves of the lines and shapes being shown. I hope you see what I mean.

BTW, The drawing is very basic. I swear I can do better. It's just the essentials of perspective that I needed to get the point across. Plus I almost over used the pen-tool (hence some line mistakes) thinking that it would save me time in the end. Hmm... actually, it did.

Hope it helps someone out there.

That was actually really, really helpful. I always knew about using line weight to add depth, but this helped put it in perspective a lot better. Thank you!

Actually, I was just thinking about this, and wondering if I was screwing up my drawing by altering the line weights badly/too much. Now I know what to check for. Danke!

I've only very recently started to think about how line-weights make a difference in drawings, so this is really helpful and informative for sure Thanls, and you do a great job of explaining everything.

Thank you. I took an English class last semester in college and the big idea of it was how to explain ideas so other people understand them well. I hope I used the techniques effectively.

Well...I don't have any better word for it using ink to draw clean lines on sketches and such, with this tutorial I may be able to train up my ability to draw better lines so the pictures come out nicer. I'm a beginner at handling Photoshop so it could come in handy there too.

My biggest problem... well I got a lot of them... is probably forshortening, right now. I'm so bothered by her arms. I had to change the girl in the drawing's hand size at least 3 times before I was okay with it.

Yes! Line weight is one of those things that I look at a picture and it's like, that's awesome... how did they do it? And I'd be left wondering.

This is awesome. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom

Now that I have done the uploading I can comment on the actual tutorial.

Very helpful. I noticed how you had a more important line where things overlap. There is also a drawing technique called selective emphasis And it is where you make certian parts of the line (such as when something changes direction or when something overlaps) darker and a bit thicker. If done well the drawing really pops. I love how you selected a great image for your example, at first I did think that the heart was printed on her shirt. Then I saw the difference and thought, "Duh! Now i get it!". Well done. Thanks for making this.

The "contour line-weight" style that I use may be specific to architecture, I don't really know. All I know is that I learned it in arch. school and it's required for our drawings so everyone there is used to seeing it that way. But I like how it tells more of the story in a single drawing.

And you're welcome.
