Description A friend of mine asked me for some tips for basic shading so i thought of sharing this with you guys as well.

This is very basic stuff for you guys here but i may be adding some new more advanced stuff in a few days.

I didnt edit/clean any strokes coz my friend is using pencils as well and it would help her to see the individual strokes.

I learned a bit of this subconciously when playing around with raytracing (spheres on floors etc)... I think it helped though ofcourse knowing the effects by explanation always helps too. Thanks for explaining.

Very helpful. You focus a lot on tips and less on technique, which is fine (there are lots of tutorials on deviantART, and focusing on one aspect of a subject is better than a basic overview); that one about the light reflection is one especially handy to keep in mind, and not usually what people focus on as they learn to draw shadows.

Thanks for taking some of your time to give the deviantART community a present!

semaj007 In reply to pinballwitch [2008-10-12 06:38:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you as well for appreciating this. It really means a lot to me!

What i want to share are the basic stuff that any technique can be applied with. I see a lot of beginners that "copy" what they see and not understand the basic concepts and principles first. Hope to bring more to the table soon.

I agree, I was guilty of doing the same thing when I first started (and still do do it sometimes). Thank you for making a great tutorial, you've really helped me, because you ACTUALLY broke down concept, which is great.

Dont worry, i think all artists start copying than understanding. I would love to make more tutorials that deal with understanding stuff but still too busy..

Aww. Well take your time with whatever you're doing, and make one when you're ready.

They never taught me this during art lessons in grade school either! It was only until much later that I started to grasp this principle. Nice tutorial. Not too long, not too short, easy to understand and very clean

Very good. Though basic, there are a lot of people who could benefit from it. That's very generous.

Thanks! I wanted to take up tutorials that dwell more in principles rather than techniques. Something that everyone can apply to their works regardless if they do paint, digital, pencil, ink... etc.
