Description

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

Here's part 1 of a 4 part guide on how to make nuzlocke comics. I was gonna wait and upload them all at once, but I got impatient. XD

I never considered myself the best essay writer when I was in school, so I hope this is easy to follow and somewhat helpful. Also, I apologize for it being so text heavy. I promise the next one will have a lot more visuals~

I already have the other two guides typed up, so expect to see them within the next week!

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you have any additional advice you think I should have included, then please let me know!

I got sidetracked a lot after i started my nuzlocke, Β thought i would play until i defeat a gym, and draw until i caught up with the game. I agree that taking notes is key, and i realize now i should organize them better. I had a reallyΒ

cool plot line too, i think. Β I think i am going to start over now, play through the entire thing, and write down things, in a more organised fashion; then when i'm finished, develop a plot and characters, and finally put my planing on paper. I just, i really want to tell you what I had as a story, but i'm not sure if you'll listen. I...I'm having a tough time just trying to type this, trying to formulate my thoughts into words.Β

Okay, I think I understand now, I am a person constantly seeking the approval of others, and Im trying hard to not come off as needy, but I know I am. And Im sorry for this. Is it okay if a sent you a note of what I had planned in my nuzlocke, and you critique it?

Anyway, I think you should add how important it is the develop a plot line, like why is a person on this adventure? Answer this question, and the writing and development of the story becomes easier and natural, well it did for me. And when you answer this question, create your plot and causality and make sure you like it. I tried writing mine and every week i got a new idea for the nuzlocke, and tried to incorporate in some way, and it made the whole thing just too much. Make sure when planning, keep one idea in your mind and plan around your idea, don't make multiple events that don't intertwine with each other well.

I think thats all the input i have, off to download vba on my computer to restart my leaf green nuzlocke

This is a really good guide! It doesn't matter if you weren't 'the best' at writing essays, the advice came through really well!

I so get about the jokes that may have been overused though. Sometimes they really put me off a good nuzlocke, especially if references to other media are the main source of humour; it can alienate some people who either don't get the joke or aren't fans of the referenced media- though sometimes it's okay, but that's all down to the frequency they appear.
It's like, I can stand the Doctor Who references in Landwalker's Yellow Nuzlocke, even though I loathe 11, but in some nuzlocke's made by younger or less experienced people, they're not confident enough in their own abilities.

The whole Gayrod thing still kills me. I mean, Gary- in the anime and Green from the games and manga- is my favourite character of Pokemon, so I'm extra critical of his portrayal in fanfiction and nuzlockes. Your Gary? I love him. He's. Just. So. Squee.

Excellent.Β  I'm glad you mentioned beatingΒ  the game before you started the comic.Β  I was under the impression one was supposed to draw the comic as it was played.

Thanks for this.Β  I have toyed with the idea of a nuzlocke comic for a while, and this might be just the impetus to get me to start.

and to think i will make a nuzlocke for a selfish reason, because nobody is doing it like that and some people would like to read at least one of that type... and to shove a certain guy words down his throat, also because that will make it different from other nuzlockes i read, specially yours that is great and others that are awesome also. i will try to avoid some cliches but i'm sure i will fall on one or two, like the "showing battles where pokemons die" and the "pile of defeated trainers/pokemon". see u around Yin, and hope to see more of your work, as for me, i'll go upload some pages now.

I think I have a few good ideas for nuzlocke comics, but I have neither the artistic skill or dedication 2 do one myself. I'm willing 2 help anyone who needs some help in making a cohesive story though

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Enoby-way In reply to Gameb9oy [2013-12-31 21:46:16 +0000 UTC]

I'm the same mostly- I can draw okay, but only if the people are standing still... with their hands behind their backs or in their pockets... and their hair covers their ears...

Ideas and characters? Yep. I have one major one that's only been done in a narrative form, art? Nope.

We should collaborate on a narrative nuzlocke! Ohmigod. It's like, nuzlocke but without the scrapping of paper and screams of anguish when the hands turn out horribly (...just me? Oh...)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gameb9oy In reply to Enoby-way [2013-12-31 23:53:04 +0000 UTC]

That might b... Interesting. How would it work if I said yes and u do realize that most people skip the narrative nuzlockes that r already out there? (And trust me when I say I'm worse than u as an artist)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Enoby-way In reply to Gameb9oy [2014-01-01 00:08:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, we'd both decide on the game and the main characters; I'm actually hugely obsessed with character development and backstory, I can write dialogue and descriptions and only lacking in narrative.

I mean, my idea has actually been done- it's a nuzlocke told from Green's perspective, rather than the player character, but the other one doesn't really keep the characters in-character, and can be improved on a lot.

I know about that! Oh God, I've skipped past a few narrative nuzlockes on FF.net, but there's a reason why comics are looked at better than narratives, and that's because of the OCs. In a narrative, you'd only want the canon characters to be at the front, because OCs are HATED in fanfiction.

Oh, and to you and everyone else- HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Thanks, also if ur gonna use green as ur character, we might need someone 2 take blue's (the female protagonist) perspective into account as I'd want 2 b red if ur green. This is mainly due 2 the fact that most people r familiar with their names being swapped in regions outside Japan

The problem I'd have with the comic format is the time it consumes. Thee's no way I'd be able to draw out these long comics where you have to get background and stuff right on every single panel. How do you work into some sort of schedule?

RGB64 [2013-12-31 10:20:52 +0000 UTC]

I remember making my own type that changes the "fainted Pokemon are dead and must be released" rule to "fainted Pokemon are hospitalized and must be stored in the PC". To balance out my new rule and prevent things from getting too easy, I added that hospitalized Pokemon cannot be retrieved until after Lv/10 battles (you can probably already guess what Lv stands for)

I may not be interested in doing my own Nuzlocke comic, but I love this sort of behind the scenes stuff.

I am a fanfiction writer, so I know the sort of work that goes on behind the scenes first hand that most people will never see or realize. It is rewarding to be involved in fandom whether it be with fanfiction or comics, but both take a lot of work...

I agree a lot with the "start right away" kind of mentality. I've been planning out my big nuzlocke comic project for over 2 years now, and not a single day has passed where I wished I had started right away and enjoyed the comic making process...

But that idea can be reversed, too.

In 2 years I have improveed inmensely, and I'm feeling waaaaaay more prepared than what I was before- Heck, I didn't even have any kind of story. And now it's almost 2 years of refinement and modifying.
Taking your time and waiting for the right time in your artistic development is always an option too uvu

NumberSevin [2013-12-31 05:32:51 +0000 UTC]

This is very helpful. (Even though I only have lined paper). So, would it be okay to have K.O.'s normally, but poison, one-shots, and other stat-based losses be deaths if I write my own? Or are all death rules the same? Because, I remember Charlie killing Brock's Onix, while Sarge's Raichu was alive afterwords.Β

On another note, Would it be possible for you to draw Charlie getting hit with confusion, trying to use ember but instead having it be like when soda gets in your nose after you drink it the wrong way? (Only if it happens, right?)

Okay I have an actual question

What do you do if you want to make like.. a different kind of nuzlocke, separate from all the others but without over doing it or screwing up some of the characters or dragging things out?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

LittleKing900 [2013-12-31 05:16:52 +0000 UTC]

...Yin?

Can I ask you a favor?

I have wanted to do a nuzlocke comic for a long time, but I havent due to a lack of artistic ability, a drawing tablet, and most importantly, an original storyline.

Ive read sooo many nuzlockes, ive lost count, and ive practiced many things...

I think im ready.

Heres what I ask of you.

Can I note you the storyline, so you can look it over and kind of fill in or point out any plot holes/problems with it?

I think the ideas ive put in are original and different, but maybe you can see if they arent. I cant tell.

Mostly I just want a nuzlocker to look it over and give an honest opinion. I showed one friend, but they've never nuzlocked, and only read one.

I would really appriciate if you did.

What do you say?
