Description
APPEARANCE
Ilya is a small gargoyle, agile and sleek. Her physical appearance depends on the temperature around. At 25°C / 77°F and above, her wings and tail have their regular size: about 1,30 meters / 4ft 2in long for a wing, and she'll look like a small humanoid creature (see reference.) Progressively to 0°C / 22°F, her wings and tail will proportionately reduce, to the point she can't fly anymore. Below 0°C / 22°F, the thin fur on her body will grow thicker to keep her as warm as possible, but it starts to be dangerous for her life. Above 50°C / 122°F - if she manages to reach this body temperature - she will progressively start to grow and to morph into a dragon-like creature, much larger than what she usually is.
She can also turn into stone at will, completely or partially. In this state, she's immobile and all her body colors disappear to be a dull grey-blue.
DESIGN NOTES
- Inspirations: Halloween design, candy corn + seagull + Akenash elves from Styx for colors and patterns.
- Her paws are slightly lighter at the tip.
- That's a bunny nose she got there, and it will move the same as the rodent's.
POWERS, ABILITIES
Just like any gargoyle, Ilya can adopt a stone form. This form is really tough and steady, and won't break easily. Hitting it with a hammer wouldn't even leave a scratch. If she's touching some stone when transforming, she will take the color and texture of the said stone and will merge with it (her bluish stone form is the basic one, for when she's not in contact with any stone.) She can swap only a part of her body if she wants to, allowing her to climb on straight stone walls, for example.
She's also very resistant to heat, and could swim into a lava pit if she wanted to. However, she's dependant of the temperature of her environment to have larger wings and thus, to fly. On the contrary, her life could be endangered if her temperature decreases at a level where water would freeze. Her body temperature is the same as the temperature of where she is and will always seek to be at 25°C / 77°F to be at ease, sneaking in the kitchen or hugging other life forms if necessary.
Her fours ears can catch many details and secrets, and would also hear the sound of food being cooked before smelling or seeing it. Her eyes can see pretty well in the darkness, but will be weaker in a full day. She can also have a "snake vision" and see with a thermal vision when she activates this ability (it's not full-time.)
BACKSTORY
Ilya didn't grew up. She was created in her adult form by elves, to serve as a spy against humans, dwarves, and other elves. She was taught how to speak the most used languages, and she was pleased to serve her elven masters for as long as they used her. But with time, the elves created better servants, less dependant of temperature as she was. She was progressively abandonned by the elves for the profit of new ones, until she decided to live her life by her own means. Since then, it is possible to witness a gargoyle that wasn't there the day before, and which will disappear the day after, especially around kitchens. Locals will complain that some of their objects or meal disappeared when she's around.
TRIVIA
- This design is redrawn from an old scrap I had there. It was inspired by the universe of the game "Styx, Master of Shadows," in which at some point the goblin gets caught and the human asks: "What are you? A creature made by the Elves to spy on us?" I started to believe that elven spies were canon in the universe but none is ever shown in the games. Sooooo I interpreted it ahah. It's probably really false since she's really far from the game's general aesthetics, so I simply consider her as a one-off.
- During the process of creation, I started to draw a full reference sheet, telling myself that I would make her design as an open species. Sadly, I don't have time for another species management so it'll only be a personal species. If anyone's curious, I named it the "Crescent gargoyle" due to the crescents present on her tail.
If you want to check an open species made in a similar style, check the Nivikts! Nivikt-Dakti
