Description
An Alfonse Mucha inspired design for a collaborative book. Yay selkies.Name: Selkie (The legend is thought to originate from the Orkney Islands, selch or selk(ie) is the Scots word for seal (from Old English seolh))
Habitat: The ocean near the islands of Orkney and Shetland.
Selkies revert to human form by shedding their skin and go back to their seal body by putting it back on. Males tend to seek all those who are unhappy with their romantic life. Males are also responsible for storms and sinking ships, which is their revenge for the hunting of seals and females have been known to lure humans into the sea much like sirens. Females who have their skins stolen are at the mercy of the men who took their skin and have no choice but to be their wife until they can find their skin again. Selkies are only able to walk on land for a short period of time (if their skin hasnβt been stolen or burned) and must return to the sea, which is why even if a wife is happy in her new life, she must return to the sea if she learns the location of her skin and successfully retrieves it.
Description: Indistinguishable from other seals in their natural form, selkies are extremely attractive humans when they shed their skin. If they have children with a human, those children have webbed fingers and toes to signify their origin.

How clever! I always have such trouble thinking of ways to depict selkies looking magical! What with them being either a normal looking human or a normal looking seal.

Thank you :3 I think the whole Mucha-type design is magical in itself :3

I like the elegant Mucha style of this! The selkie is one of my favorite folk characters. I like the graceful mermaid-style of her flippers, and the way her hair drips down like ink past her sealskin.

Also: what's the name of the book? Is it going to be published?

No, it won't be published. It's for a book-binding class of a friend of mine and I got in last minute, so I don't know the name of it.

I didn't realize I was so late in voting! This looks stunning! You made it crystal clear that she's coming out of a seal skin even for someone who doesn't know what a selkie is.
