Hi everyone! This is a tutorial for how to make an embroidery file in Stitch Era Universal (a free embroidery program) in order to machine embroider My Little Pony eyes and cutie marks for plushies.When I started learning how to do machine embroidery, it was so difficult and I had a lot of trouble figuring out what to do to get good results. Even if you make an embroidery file, it may not translate well to the real world. I thought I could help others figure out embroidery without having so go through so much trouble as I had to. So here is a tutorial that basically follows what I do when I make an embroidery file. I hope it's easy to follow!
Also, before you can start following this tutorial, you'll need an image to use for what you will be embroidering. I use "vector" images of pony eyes and cutie marks. You'll have to remove any color gradients and add a background color so the embroidery software can process it correctly. Sometimes I also create my own image by tracing an picture or screencap in an art program (look up pony vectoring tutorials to learn more about that). Sometimes I also just draw my own image from scratch, like I did for my Ninfia plushie.

I know nothing about embroidery machines.. Do new machines allow you to sync up to the computer to upload images? Can this program be used with, say, all Brother machines? I'm deciding whether I want to invest in one, having never even made a plushie, but wanting to.

What you do is, use Stitch Era to create a .pes file (what this tutorial is for). Then connect the embroidery machine to your computer with the USB cable (and turn on the machine). Then drag and drop the .pes file to empty USB folder, and it will appear on the embroidery machine for you to use. That's how it work with my Brother Se-400 at least

Oh now I have a question @.o
I'm working on a cutiemark and when I get to the end of these steps it says what there are colors without assigned needles. What does that mean?

I not sure, but I think that might happen if there are too many colors (like bits of grey between 2 solid colors). Did you reduce the number of colors in the image? I usually reduce colors before I go to embroidery, but when I was making the tutorial it just kept glitching up. You can reduce colors before you go to embroidery (next to 'set size'), or while you are in the Art to Stitch settings. Let me know if that helps!

I'm not too happy that they are discontinuing the free version :/ If I understand correctly, people who already have the program should be able to continue using it?

Yep, those who already have it installed will be fine (if you haven't installed it yet, or the computer loses the application, you're SOL), but only for about another year (probably less). Then it will no longer be supported. I am already scouting for an affordable replacement, and am kind of leaning towards Embird. Have you heard anything good about some of the other applications?

I haven't looked into a replacement... embroidery software is like, a tool, a necessary evil, I don't like to spend extra time thinking about it :C

Well, the message at the SEU startup says that they have decided as a company to focus on the purchased softwares, and that they MAY support free service again in the future. In today's economy, I can't blame them for wanting to shed a portion that isn't bringing in revenue, even if it is inconvenient for small-scale embroiderers. While I would rather not have to drop a couple hundred on a new program, I figure I'd rather start planning now rather than get tripped up later.

i was looking at it and it says it will only be $2 a month for the standard or $8 a month for the upgrade to that so luckily they are still keeping it cheap but it would be better completely free.

Pretty much. I need to monitor it and switch the thread colors when needed. And getting the machine to do its job proper takes some practice too!

Yeah, I briefly tried hand embroidery but I quickly gave that up in favor of painting the details (until I could get an embroidery machine, though I still do some painting).

He he, yep. There's also some super crazy people who can do beautiful embroidery by hand. I don't know how they can take the time for that @_@

By the way, what software program do you use to remove the color gradients and add a background color? Thanks!!!

I just use Gimp. The wand tool will select part of the gradient and then I can fill it in with solid color. Just repeat until it's all filled in. And add another layer under the eye image and fill that in to make a background
