I'm back with more! This one's a bit longer than the last two

Hope you guys are still finding this helpful. Oh, and if anyone has questions about column objects just ask. I'm not always that great at explaining things haha. That was one of the things that was driving me absolutely CRAZY when I first started using Embird. The website tutorials did not explain how to make column objects. Technically you can just keep placing nodes and making stupid shapes - it just won't let you generate stitches. Four node ones are the only ones I know how to do.

Do you, or maybe PheiPlushies know if it's possible to adjust the stitch direction on columns with embird or to adjust individual stitches? I still haven't purchased it, but I'm about it, but there are some things I still can't figure out how to do that I could do in SEU. It just seems silly to keep paying $100 a year for SEU when i can get this for $300.

You can adjust the direction like I've outlined above, though sometimes it does go in strange directions on curves. You can tweak the shape a bit to change the direction.
As for adjusting individual stitches, you can do that once you've imported the design to Embird Editor. It's pretty tedious though.

I can tell I'm going to miss the stitch direction function in SEU...I don't know if it's worth the cost difference for that though.

I don't really get why you can do it for regular objects but not columns :\ Then again, it hasn't been that big of an issue for me since it's usually only pony irises that sometimes don't work how I want.

WhiteHeather In reply to sugarstitch [2015-06-29 06:51:49 +0000 UTC]

I don't think you can even quite do for regular areas what you could do in SEU. There's a stitch direction line you put over your area and you can put a bunch of different ones over it so that the stitch direction chances as it moves across the pattern. I think I'll still be getting embird, but that was a really nice feature on SEU!

Oh wow okay, that's actually pretty cool. I've never used SEU, so I didn't realise it could do that. It's a shame you can't do that with Embird :\ It's definitely a nice feature, but yeah I think overall it's probably better to go with Embird, since once you've paid for it that's it, it's yours.

WhiteHeather In reply to sugarstitch [2015-06-29 16:28:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. It would only take a few years for embird to pay for itself versus SEU and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be making plushies for more than three years. Who knows, maybe embird will do an update that adds a similar feature in the future. They seem to do updates every couple of years.

PheiPlushies In reply to WhiteHeather [2015-06-29 00:11:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's possible with this button . Β You can make all stitches editable by converting them via Convert > To editable stitches, but then you can't change the parameters anymore. I've never had to edit individual stitches, though.

Feel free to ask me more.

I am going to have so many questions!

Where do you select your hoop size?

PheiPlushies In reply to WhiteHeather [2015-06-29 00:18:11 +0000 UTC]

Haha, Edit -> Preferences -> Hoop. Click the little hoop icon, yours should be there.

WhiteHeather In reply to PheiPlushies [2015-06-29 00:30:55 +0000 UTC]

Lol yeah I totally found that right after I asked. I do have another question though! I'm making an object that I want to outline with a satin stitch. The start/end point doesn't look right though. Like it doesn't make a complete object or something? Anyway, I want to make the part that is circled in red look the same as the part that is circled in green as far as how the stitches lie.
Β
I assume that this is something to do with how I'm creating the object, but I'm having issues figuring out how to make it a complete form instead of a line that just happens to have the end points touching. Also is there a way to convert an outline like this to a fill object?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PheiPlushies In reply to WhiteHeather [2015-06-29 00:47:58 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. For that you need to use an actual column object. What you're currently using is an outline with satin stitches - you're not able to change the direction of the satins, they're always perpendicular to the outline. It works well for most things, but sometimes you have to use real columns.Β
You can convert an existing outline to a column via the convert menu. Β

Β

Columns allow you to really change everything about how the satins are done. The dashed lines are so called segments which define the direction of your stitches. Not every point needs to be a segment.

Β

By adding or changing segments I can further refine the direction of the stitches and design the corners however you like them.

Β

Β

The column system is one of the best things Embird has to offer, imo. It's a bit complicated to get used to, but it's amazing what you can do. Completely changed the way my irises looked.

Oh, and yes, you can convert everything to everything via the convert menu!

I have to go to bed now, but if you need more help drop me a PM on reddit or add me on Skype! ButtercupBabyPPG Β  and I can help you out. My name's PheiGoesToFillywood.

Added you on Skype!

I guess I'm having issues making a nice closed object. Is there a way to make the last two points actually connect so that they move as one when you click on the node? Or is that not possible with Embird?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 3

PheiPlushies In reply to WhiteHeather [2015-06-29 23:10:14 +0000 UTC]

You can use this button to close the current shape. If you want to the nodes as one you have to select both at the same time by holding shift and dragging a box around them .

WhiteHeather In reply to PheiPlushies [2015-06-30 01:11:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh cool, thanks for the tip with shift. That's exactly what I needed!

Also I don't actually know the answer to that question XD; I just kinda mess with them till I get what I want... but maybe phei has a better answer. lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WhiteHeather In reply to MLWPlushies [2015-06-29 03:28:13 +0000 UTC]

That and the lack of being able to easily mess with the stitch direction like I could in SEU are really throwing me off but I think Embird should be fine, obviously you, Phei, and Sugarstitch all make lovely embroidery with it. It will just take some getting used to!

I'm looking into Embird to replace SEU, so these are super helpful! I really like doing gradients in my eyes though and I'm having trouble figuring out if that is possible in Embird. Basically I need to be able to do a satin stitch that is dense at one end and sparse on the other and has no underlay. I'm not really seeing a way to do this in Embird, but I only just started looking at it so I may have missed something. Do you know if this is possible?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

PheiPlushies In reply to WhiteHeather [2015-01-07 23:55:49 +0000 UTC]

Hi! It's indeed possible, though you might have to experiment a bit. Underlays are automatically disabled if you activate gradients. The value determines the strength of the gradient. You might have to adjust the density, too.

WhiteHeather In reply to PheiPlushies [2015-01-08 03:49:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh cool. That was honestly the only thing I was worried about being able to do! I have the trial downloaded so I'll have to mess around with it more than I have. I couldn't figure out how to apply the gradient parameter when I was playing around with it earlier.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

sugarstitch In reply to WhiteHeather [2015-01-07 23:45:19 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you find them helpful

Unfortunately I'm really not sure if it's possible with Embird Gradients are something I've wanted to try but I don't think it's as simple with Embird. There is a gradient option in the parameters but it's only available with a regular fill and not auto column (Embird's version of satin stitch)
I'm pretty sure that PheiPlushies uses Embird and has some plush with gradients, maybe they might know? Sorry I'm not much help with that

I've got a quick question. Β Whenever I keep doing the column tool it keeps doing this: sta.sh/01phtpall8v4 Β It's creating these large gaps in the stitching. Β Do you have any idea what could cause this? Β Thanks, your tutorial has been super helpful!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sugarstitch In reply to KaeldraicCreations [2014-03-09 03:48:22 +0000 UTC]

That just means that the column fill is wider than recommended. It'll still stitch it out on the machine, it might just be slightly loose when it does. Do you still have to resize it a bit smaller, or have you already done that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KaeldraicCreations In reply to sugarstitch [2014-03-09 04:01:56 +0000 UTC]

Aah, originally I resized it but it seems I didn't' do it quite enough. Β Now it's working fine. Β Thank you very much for answering me. Β I should have known it was still too big. Β ;

Thank you for these tutorials again! I love how you address every single detail - explaining how to get the stitches to go in the right direction, noting that overlapping colors need to have the light colors done first, making the pictures big enough so we can not only read but SEE what is happening at each step.

You're just amazing! And I'm so sorry to hear it is taking that long for your sewing machine! Keep strong! I cannot wait to see what you produce when you get her back!

Again, thank you so much! I was so worried it would all come across as a bit condescending, but I'm glad it hasn't.

It's all good I should be starting a hand sewing project soon, which I'm pretty excited about.

Compared to other programs, and considering it's capabilities it's not too pricey. I'm pretty satisfied with it anyhow haha. One day I would love to get Bernina V6, but it's about $1000

Scarlet-Songstress In reply to sugarstitch [2014-02-04 05:30:12 +0000 UTC]

Ouch my face. Yeah that sounds beyond resonable. One day when I can afford it I will totally go and try! How are you doing on your end?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sugarstitch In reply to Scarlet-Songstress [2014-02-04 05:36:16 +0000 UTC]

Haha, apparently I was wrong and it's actually 2K. Man, I'm never going to be able afford it

You can download it as a trial version and have a play around with it, you just can't save any of your files.

A little crazy from not having much to do, to be honest. I did order some mohair though, so hopefully I'll be starting a little hand sewn project soon

Technically it hasn't even gone to be fixed yet

I called Hobbysew since they were local, and asked if they did servicing and repairs. The lady said "Yes, we have a guy that comes in every Thursday, and brings it back to us the Thursday after. Just bring it on Thursday and he'll pick it up" I had an appointment Thursday morning, but I got there before 11 and he'd already been. I know I should have asked, but I don't see why it wouldn't occur to the lady that maybe she should let me know to bring it first thing in the morning, or even the day before. I just left it with them since I can't do anything with it anyway and it saves an extra trip. It's being picked up this Thursday, and I get it back the Thursday after that if all goes well.

Haha, thanks. I hope everyone will like it. It's going to be a fair bit different from my other stuff
