Description
Shane is based on another one of my SLA characters (I seem to be on some sort of roll with this subject so I might as well post them in sequence!), and you can check out the linework of a couple more here: [link] and here: [link]Shane is an alien known as a Wraith Raider or Wraithen, a predatorial species from the ice planet Polo. Wraiths are described as hyper-lithe, bipedal feline reptiles, but the problem is no one who either plays the game or has done official artwork has nailed down what they look like finally once and for all. What I'm saying is this is my interpretation and may or may not necessarily be accurate in any sense... All SLA players are eagerly awaiting Dave Allsop's final word on the matter (when he's got the time!).
Shane's a fairly happy-go-lucky Kickmurder (espionage, stealth and melee oriented combat) Op with a wicked if alien sense of humour. He is prone to making faux-pas thanks to his very different outlook and logic and it can sometimes be very frustrating to get him to understand the crux of a problem or that his well-intentioned comments have actually hurt feelings. For example, he still hasn't worked out that complimenting women on their big, wobbly bottoms does not have the desired effect...
Shane is a little more street-savvy than most Wraiths, having been born on Mort at the Operative academy, Menny. Unfortunatly he was orphaned at an early age (such is the life of Operatives) but received a monthly stipend from an unknown but (presumably) benevolent benefactor. Here he can be seen leaping into the fray in (my take on) Silverback body armor with a custom Flick-scythe.
SLA Industries is created by and © Dave Allsop, who's own dA account can be found here: [link]

I aprove as long as no "wobbly bottom" comments come from his mouth!
Great work on the rain, are you going to do a full colour background with shane? becuase with his look he could be in the streets or leeping in the air!

Ehehehe wobbly bottoms!
Dunno much about the background as yet, other than wanting to emphasize the rain a lot more. I think it'll be kinda grey-scale and murky, just distant high-rise towers, some lit windows or maybe some neon signs, a very subdued Bladerunner-esque sort of thing.

I loikes, I LOIKES ALOT.
The way you've drawn armour is futuristic, but somewhat shamanistic? As for fighting in the rain, one of my favourite settings for a showdown and you've managed to draw it so well!

Hopefully in the far distant future when I actually get to start colouring this, the rain will be even more pronounced! Thanks for the comment, kidder!

Considering you hate doing armor, this looks great. It's shane...in the rain! jealous as always

If we had to vote between Dave's new Wraith concept and this one I'd most definitely be voting for yours.
I love it!

Thanks! I wouldn't dare compete with Dave, though. SLA is his life's work.

And that's bloody well the gist of it, isn't it? This picture surpasses any and all designs Dave Allsop has put out for the Wraiths; in fact it's what I've been looking for - only much, much better!
@Yvash: Please tell me that someone as talented as you gets paid for stuff like this or has at the very least definitive plans to go pro!
Fuck! I need at least another two years of uninterrupted exercise to reach your level! Keep 'em coming!
In the meantime, I have to adjust something in my profile...

It's Dave's baby and whatever he says, goes, in terms of designs being canon. But this is the closest I've managed to get Wraiths on paper as they exist in my head, and even if Dave changes them completely (like the proposed Shaktar he revealed recently: [link] ), this is probably how I'll always see them. I'm really glad you dig it!
As for being paid/going pro... been trying unsuccessfully to break into the Games Industry for a long time, and I'm terrible at marketing myself so Freelancing has never paid off. I'd be ecstatic if the situation changed to my advantage, I can tell you... I love drawing, I just need it to pay for itself now!

Oh it's Dave's baby alright. I'm not going to challenge his right to do as he pleases with his creation - in fact, I find myself defending it whenever a discussion about SLA Industries flares up. And I regularly list him as a favourite artist, mind you.
On the other hand, my fanboy streak only goes so far; I look at each of his pictures and designs individually. The majority of his stuff feels like someone struck a tuning fork and pressed it into my brain; then there is some stuff I quite like - but there are also a few of his pictures I don't like that much; the Wraith from Hunter Sheets Issue One is one of them.
So yeah, as far as official designs and stuff go, he has the final word. But I don't make that much of a distinction between official stuff and fan-made stuff anymore these days, because if there's one thing the SLA Industries fanbase is more than any other RPG fan base I know, it's being creative. Just look at the sheer amount of text currently residing in the archives of fractalsilence.com - some of it bad, some of it mildly interesting and some of it utterly brilliant!
SLA Industries is a game that has survived it's hiccup publication history because the fans kept it going.
And yes, I'm going to buy the next book, when and if it comes out. But if I don't like what I see in the previews, I might skip it.

I agree with Jack on this subject. Dave most certainly has his moments, but equals it with (imho) some really bad designs as well.
As for the new shaktar design (eventhough I realise it's a speedpaint):

Ah now, be fair! He also stated that the new look is still in development.
The design can easily survive on it's own merits. And for a speed-paint, it's bloody impressive.
...but I do agree that this isn't something I like to associate with Shaktars, either.
