Description HA! I finally coloured my drawing of Azula ([link] )

It's 3:30 AM! Once I get into the zone, I just lose all sense of time! AAAAAAAAAAAAH!!

I was supposed to be doing homework, but I'm just enjoying my newfound colouring powers too much! At least I'm procrastinating constructively... >_<

I'm very happy with the way this turned out....in fact, I was so happy, I decided to sign it!

So here's a question. How exactly did you draw this? Photoshop? What brushes/textures did you use? Did you make any of your own? Have you saved any of the seperate stages?

Well, the lines were just done in pencil, then the rest was photoshop. No special brushes/textures used - just the regular brush with varying opacity levels - that's all I know how to do . And regretabbly, I don't have any WIPs for this .

always save your stages. They make great tutorials. plus if you want to go back a step.

If this is your first serious attempt at digital coloring, I'm very impressed. I'm particularly impressed by how you managed to pull of such a realistic string of fire.

Did you applied that dark background before you started coloring this? If so, you win the prize. Many people just start off with a white background, on which everything looks impressive.

And now the constructive criticism to improve upon.
Lighting is a bit weak in my opinion, and it could've made the piece stronger. She's generating several kilovolts in that finger, that's gotta generate a fair share of light. Adding a blue shade on her face and everything surrounding the hand might do the trick. That also goes for the fire, but in a lesser extend.
And you might want to try to avoid showing the actual "paint" strokes, which are particularly visible in the folds in her "dress". They just look a bit unpolished and rushed. Not saying it is bad by default, it more like a suggestion for experimentation.

Anyway, well done, your definitely showing an amazing learning curve.

Hey- thanks for the comment- coming from an artist of your calibre, it really means a lot to me!

You're absolutely right- the lighting is definitely not as strong as it could be! When I first conceptualised this picture, I had a really cool image in my head of how the fire was going to look like, and to me- colouring in Azula was more like....a way to get to the 'good part' which was colouring in the fire . I definitely could have spent more time colouring in Azula and colouring how the light from the fire interacts with her clothes and such.

I have this weird drawing habit whereby once I start on something, I really don't want to stop, and I knew this would take me into the wee hours of the morning, so finishing Azula relatively quickly was something I had planned in order for me to get SOME sleep .

Incidently, the grey background was something that I had created at the start- I think that the fire would have looked less impressive if the background was white.

Thanks again for the advice!

Ahhh... grunt carried through with something he said! Run for it!

That aside, for some reason i think the cloth is the best coloured part of the pic.

I like the fire! It's what this picture's all about!

The cloth actually isn't anything special- my rough pencilwork helped to give it some texture .

Wow, I've never gotten a comment like that before! Probably because I never colour my stuff!

Thank you very much!

*$&$&!!

Awesome! I loved her before, but now, she makes my blood run cold

I love how you colored her fire both red and blue. Perfect...

Hehe- thanks! You're my biggest fan!

Sometimes, in Avatar, you'll notice that she'll shoot out blue fire, but after it impacts the target, it cools down a bit and becomes normal red fire. That was the idea behind this picture- that this little trail of fire of hers gets hotter as it nears her fingertips.

One of your best drawings so far! It looks amazing coloured like this. The colouring is really great and the drawing already was great. ^^ I love it!

Dank ΓΌ !

Usually, I like to consider my drawings as fully completed artworks, but this one was an exception. Looking at my Azula sketch, you can tell by the way that I didn't really define the fire that I was planning on colouring it. Also, the concept of the fire turning from red to blue as it nears her fingertips was something that I had no idea how to draw with just a pencil .
