In the 14th century, a soldier wandered out into the woods on his horse to find something to eat. He came to a tree that consumed his soul, along with his skeleton, intestines, bodily fluids, and blood. Nothing was left to fall to the ground but skin, skin that fell and brushed some leaves away. One leaf that fell from the soul-consuming tree made its way into the human exterior. It sat there in the shade of the pale, stretchy material. The stem of the leaf started to sprout in little millisecond outbursts, growing longer and thicker.
The stem finally sprouted out of the skin, growing branches, eventually advancing high enough to connect with its father. Maynark came into being, developing deep brows and a small pointless limb taking the shape of a foot. His personality physically shaped his new skin. The magic of the tree enabled the acquired human skin to stay fresh and moist, while also not fully decomposing.
Maynark came to believe that his only emotion was sadness, for he had no companionship over the next 200 years. He hung from the branches that grew out of his eye sockets, only seeing a mouse or a deer in the distance. Once, a woman crossed his path, and he could only reach and hope for her to notice. She did not, and he resumed his sorrowful glare into the distant forest.
One night, 201 years after his own creation, he spotted a very odd, slow creature moving around a tree nearby. Maynark didn't want to disturb the sloth's slow, graceful lifestyle, but he did not want to exist by himself any longer. He possessed the longest branch of the tree upon which the sloth grazed, making it curve backward slowly. Then like a Python, the branch pierced through the sloth's odd nose, quickly wrapping around the short spine, then sprouting out of the body into two new limbs. The sloth made a deep moan then stopped as it was slowly carried toward Maynark. It was now a permanent attachment, an everlasting closeness.
Maynark named his new friend Frumby, and they lived on.
