Their drivers agreed to the race going ahead. The stationmaster raised his green flag and said, "Are you ready?"
Both Thomas and Bertie's eyes narrowed as the flag dropped.
"GO!!!" cried the stationmaster!Β

And they were off!
It was always long before Thomas could build up speed, so he never really could go fast at first and Bertie always drew in front.
"Why don't you go fast?" called Annie and Clarabel.

"Wait and see," whispered Thomas.
"But Bertie's a long way ahead!" the two coaches wailed. Thomas didn't mind, though. He had remembered the level crossing...

There was Bertie FUMING at the crossing gates while a certain cerulean engine and his two light brown coaches sailed gaily through.
"Goodbye, Bertie!" they called.

Bertie soon left the level crossing, growling. After the crossing, the road left the railway so they couldnβt see Bertie. Thomasβ train stopped at the station to let off passengers.

"Quickly, please!" he whistled, and then they were off yet again. "Come along, Anne and Clare, come along!"
"We're coming along," the two coaches sang.

"Hurry, hurry, hurry!" panted Thomas. Then he gasped as he looked ahead! There was Bertie tooting triumphantly on his horn!
"Better hurry Thomas!" teased Bertie.Β

"Oh deary me, oh deary me," groaned Thomas.
"Steady now, maboi," called his driver. "We'll beat Bertie yet."
Annie and Clarabel liked those four words and joined in. "We'll beat Bertie yet, we'll beat Bertie yet," they sang.

βWeβll do it, Weβll do it,β panted Thomas, but then...
βOh bother! Thereβs a station! We have to stop!β

Then, he heard Bertie.
"Goodbye, Thomas," he called. "You must be tired. Sorry I can't stop. We buses have to work, you know." And he drove away.
"Oh, dear," thought Thomas, "we've lost!"

But he felt better after a nice drink from the water tower. James had just left the junction with a slow goods, and the signal dropped.

"Hurrah! We're off! Hurrah! We're off!" puffed Thomas.
As they crossed the bridge, they heard an impatient "HONK!!!! HONK!!!!"
There was Bertie waiting at the traffic lights. He started with a roar and chased on after Thomas once again.
Now Thomas reached his full speed. Bertie tried hard, but Thomas was too fast. Whistling triumphantly, he plunged into the tunnel leaving Bertie toiling far behind.

"We've done it, hooray! We've done it, hooray!" chanted the two light brown coaches, as they WHOOSHED into the last station!
Everyone was there to give Thomas three cheers for winning the race......but they gave Bertie a big welcome too.

"Well done Thomas!" cheered Bertie. "That was fun. But to beat you over that hill, I should have to grow wings and be an airplane."
The two friends shared a good laugh at that.Β

They now kept each other very busy. They often talked about their race, but Bertie's passengers don't like being bounced like peas in a frying pan, and Sir Topham Hatt has warned Thomas not to race at dangerous speeds. So although, between you and me, they would like to have another race, but I don't think they ever will. Do you?

(And then Three Cheers/Hooray for Thomas occurred, as well as Thomas' Shortcut and other episodes where they race)
(Also the end. )
