"Here's your freight train, James." said Thomas. "Have you got some bootlaces ready?" And he ran off laughing.
This made James very cross.Β
(yes I watch the US dubs, deal with it)

"OH!Β OH!Β OH!" said the freight cars. "We want a proper engine, not a red monster!"
James took no notice and started as soon as the conductor was ready.

βCome along, come along,β James puffed, struggling to get the freight train moving.

"No we won't! No we won't!" screamed the cars, determined to make James give up.

But James didn't care, and he pulled the screeching cars out of the station. Edward was watching from afar with his passenger train to follow.Β
"Good luck James!" he called. But James couldn't hear.Β

The cars tried hard to make him give up, but he still kept on.
Sometimes their brakes would slip on and sometimes their axles would run hot and each time the trouble had to be put right and each time James will start again, determined not to let them beat him.

βGive up! Hold back!β The cars cried. βYou canβt beat us, James!β

"Yes I can! Deal with it!" puffed James.Β And slowly but surely, he pulled them along the line.

Soon they saw the hill where Gordon had got stuck.

"Look out for trouble, maboi James," warned his driver. "We'll go fast and get them up before they know it. Don't let them stop you."

James went faster and faster. Soon they were halfway up. Jamesβ face was as red as his paintwork as he puffed on.

"I'm doing it! I'm doing it!" panted James. "Will the top EVER come?!"

Then there was a sudden jerk, and it all came easier for James!

"I've finally done it!" he cheered. "Hooray! It's easy now!"

But his driver shut off steam.

"They've done it again, James," he sighed. "We've left our tail behind. Just look behind us."

The last cars were rolling backwards down the hill. The coupling had snapped.Β

But the conductor stopped the cars and got out to warn approaching engines.

Edward saw his red flag waving and stopped. He watched as a cross James started back toward his cars.Β

"Shall I help you, James?" called Edward. "No, thank you, Edward," answered James, "I can pull these silly things on my own."

βGreat! Donβt let them beat you!β Called Edward.

AsΒ James slowly struggled up the hill, he kept saying, "I can do it!Β I can do it!Β I can do it!" to himself.

βWay to go James!β Called his driver.

They reach their station safely and James was resting in the yard when Edward pulled up.

Then, James saw Sir Topham Hatt.Β

"Uh-oh," thought James. "Now I'm in trouble." But he wasn't, because Sir Topham Hatt was smiling.
