Description
It was obvious that [Red] was fighting tears and his whole body was shaking. Although his hands were still pouring out healing energy, they had stopped moving.
It tore at Edge's soul to see his brother like this. Red was so delicate, and seeing his fragile body tremble and his soul grow so vulnerable, made him want to hold him close and protect him from all fear and all pain. He couldn't, but he had do something.
The blanket had been pushed aside in his earlier efforts to get out of bed. Edge grabbed one corner, and swept it dramatically into the air. It billowed upward and outward, then drifted down over both brothers. Edge held up part of the 'ceiling' between his face and Red, so they could see each other, his eyes glowing softly in the dark shelter of the impromptu blanket cave. The world was shut out. It was only the two of them.
Red almost immediately felt comforted by the fort. It was just them.... no one else could see him cry, and so he let fat tears roll down his cheeks.---
Another illustration from mine and KaptinKate's Β Undertale/Underfell RP story (no link yet, it's almost ready though!). This time, I drew the lineart, and she colored it! <3 She did an amazing job! Very similar to my style, too! The story we made is just gripping my heart and won't let go.
Itβs supposed to be basically a cut-away or cross-section of them under the blanket. I hope I managed to convey that somewhat... o.o

During the course of the RP, me n Kate slowly managed to establish a backstory without really talking about it, kind of bouncing off of each other's vague clues until things became solid. (It's aaaaalmost ready to publish, I just gotta test with fonts and formats. CSS is weird, but I wanna preserve the colors and tricks I did with text in the Google document).
The world is just plain brutal, and these two can only afford to be subtle and indirect with their signs of affection, and only in an emotional emergency, so to speak. As kids, they had been very close. So, it makes sense that innocent, childish things would end up being comforting to them. That was my thought process when I came up with the blanket scenario. Even though nobody was there to see them anyway, it was just a symbolic way to say "F*** the world we're in, we need more closeness than usual right now." Separating themselves from reality just for a little while, with a physical barrier. Their own little world of understanding and comfort.

Ees so sad... ;_; The whole world is wearing them down, despite how strong they both are. It's a heavy burden, both physically and emotionally.

The description tells some of it. Basically, Edge (Pap) got badly injured. Red (Sans) was healing his fractured legs. They were talking about things, and Red really wanted to be close to his brother, to live on the surface with him and buy him a car, and for them to just be nice and hug and be happy without so much risk of death... But he knew they couldn't. So he was almost crying.
So, Edge made a tent with the blanket, so his brother would feel safe enough to cry. Almost like an indirect hug, and as a symbol of shutting out the world for just a few minutes.

underfell is honestly an absolutely gruesome place with 0 kindness (unless you are looking at kaitogirl's version xD), I'd hate to be there.

That's up to interpretation though; many others also make the characters huge dorks (such as CrashBoomBanger's voice acting skits on his blog). I used to laugh at them as potential tryhards who just try too hard to be edgy, when inside they're all just silly and playing around.
But I also like the potential drama and angst of playing it straight. Everything from Papyrus being abusive toward Sans, to them being secret cinnamon rolls when no longer in public. KaptinKate and I kinda managed to fall somewhere in the middle with our own headcanon, which has literally made me cry several times. Loneliness/longing has been one of the worst pains in my life (not so much now, thank goodness), so it's quite effective for angst/drama to see these bros in that state.
