HISTORY:

Echelon class was in development from late 2380s. Shortly after Sagan class enter service, Starfleet decided to create a lighter patrol cruiser using the same hull and nacelles of Sagan class. In size it was equal to Sagan, with largest difference, lacking lower set of warp nacelles, having two instead of four. Interior arrangment is similar but there were slight difference here and there. Comparing to Sagan class which had slightly better armament and defenses as well more exploration on board, Echelon was built to be cheaper and to fill the void that was left with large amount of older ships like Miranda, Excelsior, Springfield, Freedom een retired. It was interim solution for Starfleet till new generation of ships start entering service. Since many more powerful ships like Inquiry, Akira and others were usually deployed on borders and strategically important places, less capable ships that were fast and could be quickly deployed were needed. Steamrunner and Saber classes were used in this role but another larger vessel was needed. Echelon class was perfect for the role, used in many different missions. From 2395 to 2401, twenty two ships were built with dozen under construction all over Federation, twenty of these ships were members of Terran and Vulcan sector fleets and these ships would particiate in 250th Frontier day in 2401. Last two ships were at Eridani yards under some repairs as they had problems with their engines (faulty during production). Unfortunatley all twenty ships had Fleet Formation Mode (FFM) and after younger members were assimilated by Borg this ships attack the Probert Station in orbit of Earth with rest of the two sector fleets. Four ships would be destroyed or damaged beyond repairs and retired. Class continue with production as many of this ships were needed to fill the still existing gaps in Starfleet. While cheaper then Sagan and having slightly less capability they were perfect assets as patrol and attack cruisers.
