hehe.. just wanted to make a tutorial on how to load .avi files in MMD.. ^^ or how to add the video on the background in MMD..September 2021: At present, I use Sony Vegas Pro in converting my videos, render with "video for windows(.avi)" and change the encoder to Microsoft Video 1

to sum up this tutorial:
first open MMD
you should have MMD version 7.39(or upper) www.geocities.jp/higuchuu4/pic…
to make avi files work on MMD.. you have to download "Prism Video file Converter" the link: download.cnet.com/Prism-Video-…
version doesn't matter as long as you are able to convert it to Microsoft Video 1
so after you downloaded it, open it
click add files and select the video file you want to load on MMD..
change it to .avi then select where you want to save the video file..
AND! (thanks to Becha27[from youtube])
click the encoder options and change the video compressor to MICROSOFT VIDEO 1 (IMPORTANT) if you don't have microsoft video 1 try this

Oh.. and I found an alternate tutorial if this won't work.. mmdyesbutterfly.deviantart.com… this tutorial uses a different video converter.. I hope it helps ^_^

Yes, it does. When I pause the video it pauses on the exact frame I need.

Helping others out with adding a bit to this, you don't HAVE to use the program that the OP uses to convert it. They have a program on the same website called "Videopad Video Editor"
If i remember correct with the free version that it doesn't have a time period that it expires and allows you to export the video in the format needed. I hope this helps! ^.^

Mine was already AVI. now it loads, just when it loads its black and there is no tutorial on that I can find... Someone help? T^T

I've experienced that too XD mine goes black after a while then the "failed to load avi" message thingy appears XD
have you tried closing other program besides MikuMikuDance? avi is a BIG file(takes up so much memory in your computer) so it increases your computer's workload when you load it.. so you have to close other programs to reduce your computer's workload... and so your computer can handle the "heavy" avi video file especially if it's a video that is more than 3-5 minutes XD hope it helps.. >..<
aaaand reducing the number of minutes of your video can help, i guess? XD shrink your avi video as much as possible haha XD

Well one it worked on my old computer which was so crap it couldn't even open internet engines like fire fox, internet explorer or chrome, and yet it did it. But I did all you said, none of it worked... x-x Even shrunk it... Still nothing.

:/ weird.. if you play the video(not in MMD) after converting it to microsoft video 1.. does it play? maybe the avi got corrupted or something because of the conversion haha XD I really don't know why that happens.. @.@ I'm sorry my knowledge is only up to here.. does the video go black right after you load the video in MMD? or it goes black only after a few frames? because.. in my case, this "EXO HISTORY practice video" file worked for me but when I played it, after it almost reaches the end, the video suddenly becomes black.. aaaaand I also have another avi video i converted that worked fine when I loaded it in MMD and didn't go black BUT. when I played it with just a few frames.. after a while, it got removed from mmd following the message saying "cannot open avi file"....
so what I did is, I kept restarting MMD so the avi will be opened again and I also closed other programs.. but.... now I got a new computer.. weirdly, I don't get those problems anymore... just sayin' hehe just for information purposes haha.. I'm so sorry that I am no help

I think that it has to be a specific kind of .avi so try it with the tutorial...Maybe it will work

nope, just tried another avi. And for some reason the other avi file opened but was black, this one had an error pop up. so I don't know, this is making me rip my hair out from the lack of sense it makes.

I downloaded the Prism Video file Converter a while ago, and now it says my free trial was over... Is there another good converter you know of?

Try using some keygen/serial number for Prism Converter from the net (if it's asking for it) XD I don't know any other converter that converts to Microsoft Video 1 or something that is compatible with MMD tho.. :/

I usually use virtual dub for the process and it works,but after importing BG video,after few seconds it crashes.This is so easier.
