Description
I use Photoshop7. You can do this layer trick in about any program. You don't need to have 7 or photoshop for that matter. I've done this in Open canvas too and I'm pretty sure painter would also let you but I don't like using painter. And Another helpful tip is the hot keys. You can hit [ and ] on your keyboard and it will make your brush size change for you. This is very helpful. Control z is to undo but only once. I usually just use the history to go back on a mistake.
I guess I should mention too that you can use the fill bucket to fill in the color for better accuracy so that you wont miss a spot but I use my brush at such a giant size that it not a problem for me.
anndddddd because you are using ONE color on your shadow layer its not always going to work perfectly. So like say you have a dark blue as your shadow and the girls hair is dark too the shadow isnt going to show up as well like it would on the skin which is light. So what you want to do is go to the line art and select the part like say all her skin? and select it then go back to the layer with the shadows and go up to "image" and play with the brightness and contrast until you get it as light or as dark as you want!
note that you shouldnt always use this shading method. I really like playing with the color balance in the end anyway! These are just helpful tips hopefully making it easier for you to use photoshop and layers.
If you have any questions please feel free to note me but please read over everything first :3

So see, the REAL secret is knowing how to shade like OMFG with the blue part. Not a skill I ever mastered. Or minored. Or even passed.

I do a thing even faster :3
First select all the drawing
2-copy the drawing CTRL+C
3-create 2 layers one filled in white and one over the white, but filled in black
4-select the top black layer, and push the "quick mask" button (also works pressing Q)
5-paste the drawing on the black layer with the quick mask activated
6-now you can see a black layer with your line in red
6-put the drawing in standar mode (pressing Q), now you have a lection with your lines
7-press DEL
8-now you have thjust the black lines on one layer
9-colour between the lines and the white layer :3
The advantage of this metod, now you can paint the lines easily and also put all kind og masks and efects without have any problem ^___^

This is just a way to have just the lines in normal mode (not multiply) on a new layer , you can do the same things of the multiply method but with some extra advantages :3

awesome! oh, and to undo more than one step use alt + ctrl + z, then if you undo a couple of steps and wish they were back, you ctrl + z to undo your undos--it's a neat way to see your progress

^_^ hey, no problem. it's not quite a fair trade, -_- but I guess you'll forgive me. I'm definitely going to have to try your technique, though! seems like a lot less of a pain than the other things I've tried.

Awsome, I used to shadow like that but now I find it easier to just set a new layer at overlay, that way I get a more true shadow
