Description I use Photoshop7. You can do this layer trick in about any program. You don't need to have 7 or photoshop for that matter. I've done this in Open canvas too and I'm pretty sure painter would also let you but I don't like using painter.

And Another helpful tip is the hot keys. You can hit [ and ] on your keyboard and it will make your brush size change for you. This is very helpful. Control z is to undo but only once. I usually just use the history to go back on a mistake.

I guess I should mention too that you can use the fill bucket to fill in the color for better accuracy so that you wont miss a spot but I use my brush at such a giant size that it not a problem for me.

anndddddd because you are using ONE color on your shadow layer its not always going to work perfectly. So like say you have a dark blue as your shadow and the girls hair is dark too the shadow isnt going to show up as well like it would on the skin which is light. So what you want to do is go to the line art and select the part like say all her skin? and select it then go back to the layer with the shadows and go up to "image" and play with the brightness and contrast until you get it as light or as dark as you want!

note that you shouldnt always use this shading method. I really like playing with the color balance in the end anyway! These are just helpful tips hopefully making it easier for you to use photoshop and layers.

If you have any questions please feel free to note me but please read over everything first :3

Huh, so you use a shadow layer? I just always whent in and airbrushed the diffrent layers, it gives it a bit more depth, but I guess it takes alot more effrot than the shadow layer method...

zambicandy In reply to Mercenary-Artist [2006-09-22 21:13:58 +0000 UTC]

It does take more effort because you have to choose all the colors. And this method doesnt always work because say for instance I made the hair dark and the shadow color is dark too it might not show up as well so I have to go to my shadow layer and then make the hair part a darker color!

Wow, that's very helpful. I never thought of using the select tool to color inside the lines like that, and the separate shading layer with one color is a great idea, too. Thanks a bunch!

Some people dont like it because it does take a little getting used to and might take you longer than just coloring it all in by hand but I find it VERY usefull and cant live without it haha.

I just used a pen :3 haha *just used* well It does help that it was a lovely pen but also when you scan things and then shrink them it always helps at making things look smoother than they really are. And thank you!

I must thank you alot, as a sketch artist when it comes to color it is like banging my head against the wall. I was looking for an easier way to do it. An adobe isn't really much help unless you already know what you are doing.
Thanx

Wow, that is a very cool and unique method. ^^ I'll have to try it out sometime, although I'll probably have trouble with the shadows

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zambicandy In reply to delete-lover [2006-09-22 21:09:33 +0000 UTC]

Shadows are very hard! you have to learn where to place them and I take a bunch of liberties haha. But What I did was just study a bunch of cell shading pictures and tried them out myself untill I liked the outcome ^^
