Description
I have often wondered if Sesshoumaru is content with the supreme responsibility laid on him by his father. My guess would most likely be yes, for the most part. Sess is nothing if not proud, and clings limpet-like to his heritage. The big question might be, what drives Sess to protect the Western Lands; are they the same reasons as his father's, whatever those may have been, or does he have something different in mind?I hope that I'll learn something about that in the third IY movie...*hope hope* But for now, I am content with believing that Sess, even in times of his haughtiest arrogance, has a developed sense of honor and responsibility to not only his heritage, but those who are affected by it. Still young by youkai standards, he often reacts with overblown pride and sometimes cruelty; perhaps the weight of legacy proves heavier than pride can withstand.
Perhaps when he contemplates, he wishes for something simpler.

Definet faves for this one! The title, posture, and shading -- heck, the whole composition -- are well set.
Indeed, one wonders what is the toll of "Western Lord"? Sesshomaru's father died when he was still in adolescence, so he probably had to muddle through a lot leadership issues on his own.

Thank you so much! I still like this drawing; there has always been something about the combination of pose and texture that I just like.
*nod* Agreed...it's interesting to surmise what unseen struggles characters go through when faced with life-changing events, such as the death of a parent, being caught in power struggles, or any myriad of things. Knowing Sesshoumaru, the obstacles were many.

It's beautiful. The thing I like about your drawings is that they don't have the perfectly smooth lines... is that a stylistic thing? It's very nice. I just haven't seen many people do it.

Oooo...it's comments like this that make getting up in the morning worthwhile. ^____^ There are a few reasons why my drawings don't have the signature anime smooth style...One is, I grew up learning how to sketch in a very short-stroke, "chicken-scratchy" style at school. Second, I have a veeeery unsteady hand. *laughs* Seriously, I don't know if I could draw an unaided smooth line to save my life, and I always envy my friends who can. ^^ Third, for some reason, I'm just not as interested in the perfectly-smooth, crisp, anime-style cel-shading and inking. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that so many people do it, and it starts to get a bit old after a while. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy anime, obviously, and I appreciate the skill of those who can do it well, but I just know it's not my style. ^__^ I consider myself a bit more "painterly," preferring more traditional approaches to art from time to time...I looove textures and brushwork. As if you couldn't tell by my gallery. *cackle* Oh and I love working more with colors, and it's harder to do with the smooth-line style. Fourth, I think there's a bit of laziness in there by yours truly. XD I just don't like spending that much time trying to make the lines perfect. It takes a lot more effort on my part to do that, because of my current techniques and unsteady hand, so I only do it when the situation absolutely calls for it. Which is pretty rare, thankfully.
Wow. Sorry about the long-winded reply...kinda got carried away.
Thanks for the interesting question, and adding me to your friend's list, I'm honored! ^___________^

Thank you, I'm glad you like my more "realistic" rendition of him. ^_^ I like doing profiles once in a while, and it was interesting to see what my brain came up with while translating him from a "pure" anime style, to a more stylized version. ^^

Oh Zanne, you've been coming out with the most beautiful stuff lately! (And it ISN'T just because of the subject matter )
I love how this shows the quiet, contemplative side of Sesshoumaru-sama (then again...he's not exactly loud and brash the rest of the time either is he?). You've also brought up several points that I heartily agree with. I love nuanced characters with aspects of them that aren't obvious at first, and I think Sesshy's one of those. (My friend just think's he's an arrogant bastard )
Wonderful job, yet again! ^.^

....That's some really deep thought. I've never thought of Sessy like that.... Damn.
You portrayed your thoughts well into this drawing. He looks thoughtful and tortured... it's really nice though, the grain makes it look like it's in the past but might be occuring now too
