Description
This is the third drawing I did for the Super Mario Bros. Monster Compendium, and the first of the three Koopa Kids I've done (although it was the second to be submitted). Roy Koopa is the biggest and toughest of all the Koopa Kids, and he is the boss of the fifth world in both Super Mario 3 and Super Mario World. He was called Bully Koopa in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, but I really don't see why he and the rest of the kids had to have their name changed. His name comes from famous rock musician Roy Orbison, composer of such hits as "Oh, Pretty Woman", and "You Got It".

Even though I knew i had done a good Job on the first two, this was the first picture I was really proud of myself for. I like drawing big, bulky figures, and this continues to be a good source of practice for them, starting with this one. The art for Roy Koopa (and the other bigger kids) hasn't got a muscle mass, but I didn't think it would be inapropriate for him to have al least a little. I went for a "sumo" style muscle mass, as you can see with this, Ludwig, and some later pictures, and I think that works better than anything else would. Of course, I still needed (and wanted) to keep it true to the original design, so that;s why the feet look the way they do. As I started drawing Ludwig, I decided to scrap that bronto looking feet design, and go for something with more shape. As good as this all it, there is one gaping flaw in the design in this picture (that's not consistant with the original art) that I corrected in later drawings. I'll leave it to you to find it, as it is rather embarrassing when you come right down to it.
