Gaster talks a big game about doing this for the good of all monsters and such, but a lot of his experiments are motivated by self-interest or personal curiousity.
This puts that one line from that silly comic from a while back about Papyrus glowing enough for both of them in kind of a sad light, doesn't it? As for why Sans still has a pupil in his dead eye, he can manifest one but he can't see out of it. Sort of like a glass eye.
Papyrus isn't healing him, he's just trying really hard to soothe him. He doesn't know how to heal at this point, he'll learn how to do that later .
This would be set after the escape attempt but they're not directly related to each other, really.

i think his depression is caused by him knowing there is nothing he can do when he finds the different timelines like he knows there is nothing he can do to save paps from death and he thinks he is never going to get his happy ending so this makes him give up on everything he once like doing has no interest in now which means he is depressed but paps does not now so he just thinks sans is lazy even tho he just give up on everything because he see no point but his eye might have coursed some of the problems so that his what up with his depression and why he is lazy i hope this help u bro.

Nope, he's blind in his right eye. Zarla said the reason he has a pupil there (sometimes) is because he can manifest one, like a glass eye, but he still can't see anything out of it.

It also explains why he dodges to the right instead of the left because he can't see out of his right eye.
So, when we fight Sans, we're actually fighting a lazy, tired-out, sleepless, giving up on the world short skeleton, who's overweight and is disabled...while dealing with depth-perception, insomnia, and having very low based stats due to his past who is able to wield some of most powerful magic in the underground...
He's a brave badass.

Wait, if Sans can't see out of one eye then what do they think when they don't remember all of this. Or, well, what does Sans think, like it would probably cause questions interesting to see how he keeps the normal eyes the same even after everything.
