This would probably be the first time they've seriously fought about something or raised their voices at each other. They're scared and in pain and aren't really handling this very well. No one is happy with this.
(Gaster isn't handling it very well either, not that he's going to admit it)
If you really want to feel bad, a lot of their conversation still applies if they were talking about you the Player, haha.

There aren't really very many good English onomatopoeias for really deep long gasps, that's what the first GGGHHHH noise is meant to be. Hopefully that came across? Oh well.

Well I was really wondering if the situation would be different if he explained S&P what he was doing, presenting them as martyrs sacrificing themselves to save the world. Won't they be relieved that they are actually suffering this for something ?
It can even makes them accept it! Mostly P who seems to be the martyr type.
Actually, Gaster already knows that S is a clever one. By showing him his researches, can't Gaster find some help in him? If he convices them they have to do this.
Maybe, with this, improving their living conditions and relationship will help to prevent a rebellion. Yet, if I was in Gaster's shoes, I'll try my best to brainwash the kids and make them believe I'm on their side. Since he's a paternal figure it won't be that hard. They need him and need a reason. Plus Gaster looks like he needs some motivation too and what's more motivating than having its own gunea pigs asking to be tortured for the greatest good? '-'

this entire idea scares me. This is a well thought idea but i see a few problems.
Gaster is shown in other interactions, particularly with alphys, that he is a little moody and abrasive. plus if sans is the clever one, wouldnt he figure out that gaster is making this much harder than he needs to? I honestly dont know if he could pull off the whole martyr business.

Yeah, it doesn't suit Gaster's personality to play that whole "I'm a loveful father and you're saving the world" role :/ noneless, he is still playing one as he is trying to be an heartless scientist even though he's shivering when hurting the kids. Maybe this second role is easier for him, I don't know. Of course, that's part of the pathos. We won't get attached to a manipulator. Seeing him suffer doing what he does actually makes us feel closer to him.
I think the idea I gave will work for another scientist and when used from the start. Now, Gaster can't fix the trust he lost with S. and S. will eventually figure out that they were hurt for nothing (well he already did). Maybe apologies? Don't know. But that's a fact Gaster actually believes he is doing right and he surely have reasons for those believes. I think it would still be helpful to share those to the kids, for so he won't appears like a sadistic maniac to them and they will be less eager to push him in a hole when the opportunity comes.
...Or sharing those believes will grant him P.'s trust and will create another conflict between the brothers which won't be helpful since Gaster needs them to support each other. Humm...
Yeah, I think he has already screwed up. He had to brainwash S. from the start or at least make sure he won't turn against him. Now as we've seen in another page, Sans will try to hurt/kill Gaster if he can.
(Btw I didn't say S. was "the" clever one but "a" clever one in the way it looks like he's "asking the right questions" and looks to me very critical. I think there's good scientist potential in him in this AU (and there is in a lot lot of AU). Of course P is clever in his own way, I didn't mean to belittle him :$ Actually P sees what everyone doesn't, like the goodness in Gaster and the way he is hesitating and it could have been helpful as well for Gaster's researches. P may have found an answer Gaster was missing for days.)

You're right about Gaster having to brainwash sans from the start, and that if he told papyrus he would cause alot of problems between the two. I agree with your idea about making us feel closer to gaster, too.

I just had a thought his infamous "Entry 17" of him looking and doing research on the Void. "What do you two think?" How does that fit into this, I wonder. Doing another Expirment and asking Sans and Papyrus's thoughts on it. Kinda makes me wonder if he eventually gives up, or if he at least starts to go easier on them.
