Description
Well, this is the first tutorial I have ever attempted. I realized that GIMP is not the easiest thing to use, at least initially. (It took me forever to learn how to color under the lines rather than avoid them all because they'd get erased.) So....I made this geared towards the extreme beginner. You can use the basics I gave you here to customize how you want to find your tools. Enjoy!Link to GIMP site and download: [link]
******~~~~~~Please note that this is not using the latest version of GIMP!~~~~~~*******
-The first step is now outdated. Along the top bar next to the help menu is a menu called "Windows". When you click on it there will be a short list, and the "Dockable Dialogs" selection is where you will find all the handy windows.
-The rest of the steps should basically be the same, unless something else is brought to my attention.
-It looks like I might have to make an updated version for this tutorial in order to keep up with the latest GIMP program.

Oh, I didn't realize they changed the interface. This tutorial is a tad bit outdated then. I peeked at the latest version and you should be able to find the various windows under: Windows (along the top) and then Dockable Dialogs.
Thanks for the heads-up! I guess I should make a new tutorial for the latest version, huh?

Thanks Zephyr-chan! You really helped me with coloring under the lines on GIMP. It took me like forever to find out how to do it without erasing the lineart I already drew (but still I can't find it lawl). I only know how to draw digital art on MS Paint.
How did you made the lines so smooth? Normally I can't do it so I have to use MS Paint for the lineart.

Do you have a tablet? Is that tablet working properly (if not restart "wacom pro service") and make sure it is put to screen mode instead of the default (inactivated).

I used the pen tool, seeing as I don't have a tablet.

Oh god. Been using GIMP for a week or two now and never bothered with the layers.
This'll make it so much easier to use. Thanks!

Is this tutorial for a different version than the current one? I didn't see a Dialogues button in the File menu, so couldn't use it. :/

Oh oh. And,
if you save your drawing and come back to it later, it shoves all the layers into just one background layer, doesn't it? D:
I did most of my drawing then came back and now it doesn't separate the layers. D:

If you don't save it as a native file it does that; such as if you save it as a .pngor .jpg unfinished. However, if you save it as a .xcf, (I think that's the ginp file save), it can be closed and opened again and your layers remain intact.
Look under the save as little drop down menu to make sure that's saving it as a GIMP file. :3

Ohhh I remember now. (:
I had one saved as a "GIMP file" once, and it wouldn't open or upload anywhere except for on GIMP.
Thanks.
Now I don't ahve to feel like I have to rush a drawing to get it done in one day. xD

There's a layers section in the toolbar on the right but I still don't get it. xD
I'll have to read your guide again and have a fiddle with it later. (:

Thanks Zephyr, I really didn't realize exactly what I was getting into when I first downloaded Gimp. My limited experience with Arcsoft 5.5 and Microsoft Paint(Ugh!)didn't prepare me for the dizzying bewildering arrays of features I found there. I liked your tutorial, it was friendly and approachable. The gimp still makes me feel like those primitive ape dudes in 2001 A Space Odyssey pounding on the alien obelisk with crude bone tools just trying to make some sense of it. But with help like you have here it gets a little better every day.

You're very welcome; I'm glad that the tutorial helps. If there is anything else you might think of that needs a tutorial, just let me know and I'll see what I can do. After having worked with GIMP for a bit, things that are common sense to me may not be as apparent to those that are just starting.
