Description This tutorial covers:

-efficient sketching
-how to get smooth lines
-inking freehand
-inking with the pen tool
-neat coloring
-cell shading
-the basics of gradient shading

As the title states, it is a massively huge frickin' thing. Sorry, my dial-up friends. I saved it as a jpeg so it would load faster.

This covers most of my knowledge on how to create an image using photoshop. Hopefully it will be of some assisstance. I'm pretty sure I covered anything, but f you have any questions, please feel free to ask me!

*Ah yes, I forgot to mention a few things in this tut that are pretty important:

-if you're inking with the pen tool, after you've stroked your paths, right click and select 'delete path"
-After you've expanded your magic wand selection for coloring, delete the extra color before you deselect*

This really clears up a lot of questions I had about layer locking, and I love all the extra hints. Great tutorial!

the only thing I'm confused about is changing the color of the lineart...I'm using GIMP which is very similar to photoshop. you said that it shouldn't take long to color the lineart since the layer is locked. what do you mean by that? is there a way to lock it so that you can only color over the lines already present? I'm so lost. ;_;

Kaylink In reply to Queen-of-Flowers [2015-01-24 23:57:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's what i explain in the tutorial. I haven't used GIMP in years, but there should be an option to transparency lock any layer.Β

Queen-of-Flowers In reply to Kaylink [2015-01-25 01:51:30 +0000 UTC]

Ahaha, I was about to type a reply saying that I couldn't figure it out, there was only the lock so that you couldn't draw and a lock alpha channel... I have no idea what I did because I definitely couldn't get this to work earlier, but when I select the lock alpha channel, it lets me recolor the lines like you do in your tutorial. Awesome, this is going to save so much time. Thank you!!!

And I thought I just sucked, but this was SO perfect I can't. Seriously, I can't express in words how amazing and helpful this tutorial was. I stopped drawing for awhile,(just because I couldn't do layers) but this had me drawing again! Thanks for bringing back my inspiration!

hi, i am totally new to photoshop (never used it in my life...) and i don't have a tablet... i was wondering what was used to do the sketching part? cuz i cant seem to find any tool remotely like a pencil... =.= thx in advance for the help! :3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kaylink In reply to RaindeerDraws [2013-02-20 19:18:03 +0000 UTC]

For sketching in this, I used a tablet and just the default Hard brush in photoshop. If you're having trouble with sketching digitally I'd suggest doing your drawings on paper first and then scanning them in; it's much easier to that than try to sketch with a mouse, in my opinion

RaindeerDraws In reply to Kaylink [2013-03-17 08:23:14 +0000 UTC]

hi kaylink, i managed to get a sketch in, and i've drawn the lines, but somehow i can't use the magic wand tool like you do, because mine still looks exactly the same even after i've done what you said to do... :/

i'm on the part where you started coloring kaylink, but i'm stuck because i can't make the colors stay within the lines...
