My Yu-Gi-Oh! GX OC Azure Cross (Dub) or Kamiya (神矢) Aito (曖渡) (Japanese)

Been a While since I drew this grumpy boy, but here he is in his Osiris Red Uniform! This is the first image of him in the Visual Novel Style, even though this is technically the way he looks later in the series. I just couldn't help drawing that under-rated White Osiris Uniform on him first, but I'll have an Obelisk Blue version of him later on. (I have already done it but, I want to toss things up with which characters I'm posting one after the other)

So Azure was actually the first GX OC I ever made, and my original intention was that he would be my only/main OC for GX, however thanks to a certain Scarletu-Rozu and a role play we were trying to test out our GX characters at the time, Azure came off as a little flat and not exactly Main Character material, even though I liked him quite a bit. In order to have some more meaningful interactions, I created a more laid back, goofy character in the form of Cain and I liked him so much that he became a mainstay in my AU head canon and so Cain became my Main GX OC bumping Azure into a secondary role, but this was actually a good thing, since I think Azure fits much better as a supporting character!

Let's explore a bit more about Aito/Azure!

Aito enters duel academy in the same year as Judai with big ambitions to become not only a pro duelist, but to be the best duelist in the world. He has a strong admiration for Seto Kaiba, and his personality reflects that a bit. While Aito is not an egotistical billionaire, he is quite proud of his dueling abilities and can be a bit stand-offish and blunt. His personality doesn't make him many friends, but his dueling earns him plenty of admirers. Aito is immediately placed into Obelisk Blue dorm following his entrance exam, which he passed with flying colors. As Aito spends time getting to know his dorm mates, he begins to realize that the dorm system is extremely flawed. Due to the lack of gendered dorms in both Osiris and Ra dorms, many female duelists are given the chance to join Obelisk Blue regardless of skill level, and what's worse is that an alarming number of Blue students come from rich families and were able to bribe their way into the Blue dorm. This disgusts Aito, as he holds Dueling ability over all else, and he quickly decides that the best way to determine people's skill is through dueling. This attitude inevitably draws his attention to Yuuki Judai, an Osiris Red student. Aito keeps an eye on Judai throughout the school year and comes to respect and even admire him. Despite his distaste for most Obelisk students, Aito does make a handful of friends in the Blue dorm, namely Marufuji Ryo and Tenjoin Fubuki. Marufuji in particular serves as a challenging rival for Aito, being that he is the Star of the school. After Marufuji graduates into the world of pro dueling and stumbles a bit, becoming the Hell Kaiser, Aito challenges his way of thinking, insisting that Marufuji's new way of dueling is a weakness rather than a strength. Marufuji of course thinks that logic is ridiculous, as he is more powerful as Hell Kaiser than he ever was. Seeing Marufuji in such a state turns Aito off from Obelisk Blue entirely and he discards his status as a Blue student to Join Osiris Red, more as a statement than for any other reason, though it also means he gets to spend more time with Judai and the other Osiris students he has come to respect. Since he begins spending more time in the Red dorm, Satome Rei develops a bit of a crush on him, which Aito finds more annoying than anything else as he has no interest in her and only cares about dueling. Rei eventually backs off, realizing that her feelings are unrequited after challenging Aito to a duel and losing. Later on, when Manjoume is trying to enter the world of pro dueling, he challenges Aito to a duel to prove himself, since with Marufuji gone, Aito became the top duelist in the school. Manjoume struggles at first, but after some harsh but encouraging words from Aito, he manages to claim victory in the end, earning Aito's respect. Aito uses a Monarch deck, focused on Advance summoning monsters with powerful effects while also preventing his opponent from Fusion Summoning. Since Fusion Summoning is very popular at Duel Academy, this strategy paves the way for him to become one of the school's top duelists very quickly.

And that's the story so far! I'm usually not a huge fan of creating characters that might be considered "OP" as it doesn't always make for fun storytelling, but I think Since Aito shifted to being more of a supporting character, it works out a bit in his favor. I still think Zane would be more powerful than him, and Jaden would be able to beat him later on in the series, if he was playing seriously. I think he is at a good balance of being good enough to have earned a reputation as a powerful duelist, while still not being completely unbeatable.
