Description Tentatively titled From the Ganges to the Rhine (yeah, I don't know why either) I ended up naming this after a track by Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society. This is in need of a little cleanup still, but was something I worked on in small bits over a few days on the train commute. It is a rarity for me in that it is fully digital: digital source photographs used for textures from my Olympus Stylus, and the use of Ultra Fractal, Xenodream, Inkscape and Photoshop.

i love the ambivalence between the green and orange... the black center just ties it together beautifully.

great work.

it may not be perfectly symmetrical but it's not assymetrical - liking the pattern changes and tonal range

Awesome use of textures and patterns. What an ecxellent piece. You have a beautiful gallery. I am looking forward to seeing more of your work.

I would wear this on a teeshirt.

Not much art makes it on my clothing.

(I can't see the fractals either, but I'venever been good at spotting them.)

This is good to know, as sometime in the next year, I would like to seriously consider making clothing designs. Either T-shirts or things like dress sirts with weird patterns or ties or things like umbrellas.

Color me ambitious.

I'd buy. You have a good eye for making things that are nearly "ethnic", but are modern and abstract enough to be more interesting.

Umbrellas?

Umbrellas?

Why not? Imagine some bizarro pattern or strange scene of people painted in garish color to look through as it rains?

It's like an Industrial-style dirty stained glass window... I'm not sure how that works, but that's what comes to mind when I look at this. Awesome, really. I love that texture (err.. fractal) on there, it really looks good, especially since there are no highlights or shadows on the black... This is the least digital looking CG I've ever seen!

this is totally not like me to like this. but i do. i mean, it's symmetrical! man, you gotta be good...

zeruch In reply to patternsinthestatic [2006-03-09 20:17:29 +0000 UTC]

It is not perfectly symmetrical (I never do perfect symmetry) but that is unusual on my part to go as far as this even. But I am experimenting with Fractal generation and certain geometries, so this is where some of the output leans.

well, yes, not perfect symmetry. but pretty darn close. hmm, i wouldnt think you to jump on the fractal bandwagon too. but, you know, i can't even recognize where exactly you used the fractals in this. at least it's not just a fractal with a title. those tend to get old.

like to see experimentation. keep it up.

i wouldnt think you to jump on the fractal bandwagon too.

I didn't think I had. Truth be told, i didn't know there was one, as my knowledge of the fractal scene is essentially nil. I have played with Xenodream and Apophysis off an on for quite some time, bit it is only with the advent of Inkscape do i think I might have a bridge methodology to begin marrying my traditional approaches with it.

i can't even recognize where exactly you used the fractals in this.

Then I did a better job than I thought (although I have been vacillating between being barely content and barely in contempt)

I wasn't interested in just generating Mandelbrot sets, but wanted motifs I could deconstruct and repurpose.

eeh, yeah, i've just seen too many kids who make a fractal, put a name on it, and slap it in their gallery. they were cool the first few times, cuz i'd never seen them, but then they got really old really fast. but this is obviously not that. you're just using fractals as one of your many tools in art creation. that's a good thing.

personally, i haven't tried anything with fractals. maybe just cuz i've seen too many bad uses of them that it's turned me off to the idea. (kind of falls into the anime and girl-in-the-bathroom-with-blood categories.)
