Description This is a variation of this . For the unitiated, I typically do multiple "final" iterations of an image until I am ready to abandon it (and even then it may come back again in time).

Another addition to my jazz portraits, this is the eclectic Eric Dolphy. Eric was a bit of a rebel, and played various saxes, flute and bass clarinet (an instrument whose tonal qualities I happen to like). He was considered part of the free-jazz/avant-garde, but his style was more grounded, almost conversational, yet full of space and an almost intimate vastness. He worked with such colossal figures as John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, and even working with Herbie Hancock early in his career. Dolphy was cerebral but not inaccessible, moody but completely inventive. This image is based on the cover image to his 1963 Blue Note Release The Illinois Concert, which along with Out to Lunch is my favorite of his solo work. I also recommend his work on John Coltrane's Africa Brass.

BAH!
Eric dolphy is so awesome.
Far Cry is my favorite Saxophone included song.
the man's a genious.
As for your art work,
Very awesome.
Although the consistency of line from the sax into his face is very strange and unexpected, it really reflects Eric's actual music.
awesome.

Dolphy was and still is, sorely slept on in terms of realizing how brilliant he was. I have his Prestige box set and there isn't a bad note in the 9 discs there.

So cool, the sax looks intense like this this... the colours actually sing when they're put together like that, great piece.

What I love about some art is the color and movement in the pictures. It looks to me as if the instrument that man is playing is a snake, and is twisting and turning as he plays. Its an interesting affect. Frankly, this picture is inspiring. It’s not the classic type of picture where there’s a person and you can see the lines clearly. That could be beautiful. But here, every part of the picture has an emotion tied to it. It’d be interesting to look at because of its liveliness.

I really should hear the music before I critique the piece, but great use of color on the monotone ink washes. Very expressive line work and I love how the profile reacts with the border. The rest of your gallery looks just as promising .

Thank you sir. It is always good to bump into a fellow Breed fellow about.

As far a Dolphy goes, if you like your jazz a little out then it might be worth seeking.

this is great. i like how you chose hot colors on the sax. the instrument has this fire or it is getting really hot as he plays it yet he is colored in cools as if he is the controller of this firey instrument.
