Description
This is part of a set of experiements with words, except now I am trying to use a Sumi brush to write out arabic script instead of stencils with western typefaces.This is the Arabic word meaning peace, silence or calm.

well, that word has two meanings cus theres two different annunciations (cause theres no accents). [soo-koon] for the accent you put on some arabic words which makes you stress a specific character. OR [sukun] for places to live, location, or home.

I can't say I am speaking Arabic with any real practical usefulness, but I do have some basic phrases as well as the alphabet pretty well understood, and a few basic grammatical concepts.

well, i know it might go against the meaning "peace", but the texture of this dev invokes images of pain and sorrow. to me, peace is a more calm and serene word, best illustrated by a blank/smooth texture.
still an amazing idea though

Actually, I have been thinking about it, and I think it is almost more fitting that the word peace is rising out of such a rough and imposing background. Its almost a political statement that such a concept is still possible, no matter where it is from. I think I like it even more now.

Excellent study on letters. How are you likeing the sumy brush? I often thought of trying a smaller one in applying ink to my figures in my paintings. I see that you mentioned using screen printing ink.....have you ever encorparated screen printing to canvas? I've been wanting to try this out...just wondering....great work as always!

The Sumi brushes I have I have ever so rarely used (maybe a few times in a the past dozen years). But this project may help change that. The writing method for arabic script is not conducive to it strictly speaking, but the sloppiness in the result works aesthetically for me in terms of the textures and tones I am trying to fit them into.

No, I did screenprinting for a short while many years ago, and almost entirely on heavy illustration board. I found the results engaging, but the work overhead required per image was just too much. I have seen some rather good uses of it on canvas, but not by me (I hate canvas by itself, and for large works only use masonite).

sukun is such a beautiful word, well chosen! The piece itself is visually noisy, but the meaning of the word balances it out.

Thank you. I fnd the whole language quite beautiful, even with some of its gutteral sounds. It's vacillation from smooth, fluid sounds to sharp, cutting sounds make it very interesting. But the written form is truly spectatcular.

I have to say, this work, along with "tusadum v1", are probably my favorites out of you gallery so far. not only because I see them as passing a political message that's so appropriate today (although I wonder if that was indeed your intention), but also because you choose the perfect colours for each theme. this is "peace", and indeed the colours are extremely soft and the whole image is relaxing. the other work, was about "conflict" and the colours are more aggressive and strong.

Truth be told, there was actually no intention of a political message, but more what the visual aspects of the script (one of the words I have painted is "potato", which I don't think has any political overtones). I think part of the problem in being neutral is that the geopolitics of the region is so charged right now, that almost any word (except for vegetables maybe) can be easily construed as being political given the impetus.

Well, afetr you commented on it, I dug around and found my sumi kit and my 2 extra sumi brushes...and then they sat there for a month. And then this thing came out of me throwing random thoughts onto paper. I had debated starting with just pulling words from my old Japanese-English dictionary (from many moons ago when I took a college level course) and instead went to a language a little fresher in my head (although I still had to use a dictionary) that traditionally requires an entirely different approach to writing. I have happy fuck-ups.
Eventually I may actually get around to using the sumi kit itself to see if I can channel some Hokusai vibes.

Heh, well, truth be told, that was somewhat intentional. I wanted textures that connote something like limestone and letters that seem to be absorbing into the surface or disintegrating altogether (there are so far about a dozen similar experiments here in the studio). Most have at least one letter fairly mottled (shin, dhal and any independent taa marbuuta seem to suffer the hardest under this process
