Description It has indeed been some time since an abstract made its way up. This started as one of who knows how many ideas I have for a work that is supposed to go into the living room of a friend of mine, but ended up going way off in another direction (not to mention its vertical orientation would not work in his horizontal space).

This has some rough spots at close scrutiny but otherwise evolved rather well once the palette was established. It is a combination of two base paintings done in acrylic ink, acrylic paint and screenprinting ink (dating back to several years ago) and a pair of layers done with exported bitmaps from different Apophysis flame fractals I was constructing.

The name of the work comes from a rather odd pop tune of the same name, by the long defunct band Bourgeois Tagg (whose members later on would work with Cracker, Frank Black, Jason Mraz, Beck, Smashmouth, Tony Williams and quite a few others - basically they were an amazing band that imploded and went off to work with people who would break big). The video was banned at one point from MTV for its images of what appeared to be gleeful suicide.

Lovely colouring! You always know how to mix so many textures together that work so well with each other.

The Tagg from Bourgeois Tagg is my English teacher. We just spent his class period watching his music videos.

He didn't age well.

I had heard he was teaching somewhere near the Sacramento area (I was a UCD student)...I also once had a brief correspondence with their keyboardist Scott Moon.

I also have two of his solo albums. Maybe he didn't age well, but he sounded pretty good for a long time.

I guess I should ask, how is he as a teacher?

Well let's just say that musicians don't always make the best teachers. Though he's obviously dedicated and likes his students a lot, he just doesn't do a very good job at having structure. He teaches a class for sophomores in the HISP program (at C.K. McClatchy High School) about literature from/about Central and Southwest Asia. My biggest problems with him are that he seems to have little more than a surface level understanding of theme and symbolism, the time periods and places we are studying, nothing is consistent between semesters, he didn't have a copy of our summer reading, and the book we are currently reading, he has never read before. But he is sort of new to teaching (he started teaching at 45) and obviously he could write enough to publish a semi-popular book about Lincoln.

He does like to sing for us though and he always brings in his old bass. He started to teach us a unit about the English language when he told us about "Waiting of the Worm to Turn" and no one knew what he meant.

I see skulls. And heaven and hell and everything. It's wild.

I really want to see this taking up an entire wall.

I take a compliment like that from someone as talented as yourself with a bit of surprise. Glad you dig it.

I have always followed your work, but I have taken a long hiatus from DA. To come back and find such a beautiful painting as this only solidifies my awe in your work. As a poor college student I dream of the day I can commission your work!
