Description
This has been finished for about three weeks now - it's probably time to upload it, as I have to be finished with last minute adjustments by now.I think I don't do enough 'pure' fanart. I considered producing more a while back, but the Sonic fandom has lost it's appeal to me for the most part. However, this image provided me with enough interest and led to what you see here. I'm satisfied that not only have I produced a piece of work I am happy with, but i've proven to myself that if approached in the right way, producing art for this fandom can actually still be fun.
A more detailed background (with clouds) was produced with my precious Wacom tablet, after the first attempt was a bit bland and lacked a sense of depth. A little feedback from others can transform work in progress enourmously. Thank you to ~Fruufoo for her constructive criticism and my family offline - they helped me bring a lot more life into this piece.
Anyway - a 'classic' image of Sonic and Tails with the early Tornado, flying high over Mobius as the sun sets. Fan Art, pure and simple, which was challenging and fun to produce. I may do some more like this in the future.

Thanks, Chicobo! As an old-school sonic fan (Yep, i'm one of those damn elitist '1991' people, hehehe) I couldn't do this one any other way I'm glad it's still a popular style among the fans!

In my opinion, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the finest Sonic game ever made n_n The classic style is something I'll never forget, even though I admit to liking the new Yuji Uwekawa style :^D In this day and age, everybody wants to be new and fresh, but they really just need to stay true to the formula that's worked all along. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Ah, so much nostalgia. Really isn't like that these days is it? Great job. I love the mixture of the cartoon styled art on the characters plane, and the more realistic painted look of the backdrop.

Great pic! Reminds me of one of my favourite images from STC: the opening panel of "The Detour." Classic Ricard Elson and Nigel Dobbyn artwork, and you can't get much higher praise than a comparison to that!

I'll take old school any day! The metallic sheen off of the Tornado looks great and nicely fitting in with the sunset. The background is great with its colors ^^ You see the bright white glows coming from the clouds? I would have added more of those they seem captivating
This is beautiful work!

Oldschool Sonic. Gotta love the classics. ^^
Anyway, I really like this picture. Kinda reminds me of the first time I finished Sonic 2 for the Genesis and Sonic's flying on the plane at the end of the game. The background is done very nicely and looks very much like a real-life sunset. The shading is done perfectly, with heavy shadow really adding to the effect of the sunset in the background. And the Tornado is done very well. Not many people can pull off the oldstyle Tornado as well as this. This is definitely one to favorite.
I'd love to see more like this. Not many people still do Genesis-style Sonic anymore.

*hugs retro sonic* ^.^ we don't see enough of him! (i may like his SA look, but he looked cool in his older styles too)
love the sunsetty colours here, i've never managed to draw clouds accurately myself. tablets must be nice to be able to use. ^^

It's helped a lot with things that require less precision and more creative freedom, I think. It's allowed me to 'attack' blank photoshop canvasses in a similar way to painting and charcoal. It's been worth the excessive amount of money it cost, anyway, hehehe.
Thanks for the comment, Becca!

yeah, i'll save up for a tablet myself some day..the effects you can get look so great. ^^
..and anything must be better then this evil rollerball mouse. o_o; *kicks the computer for randomly regecting a lazor mouse transplant* evil wobbly colouring!
btw, your icon makes me laugh each time i see it. ^^ something about the 'arrghh! i have the power..of the pigtails!' that's funny.

Fear my pigtails, my last housemates seemed to lol.
I do use the mouse for colouring my cel-shaded work, it's optical and never sticks - we are very partial to that invention here, hehehe. My animation tutor told me to get a Wacom tablet, and accept no imitations - you get what you pay for, and he was absolutely right. My A5 one (with extra software) cost about £160, but it's definately the best you can buy.
*pats lovely metallic blue tablet*

Yeah, i got's me one of them too - worth every penny. When I'm browsing around DA, everytime someone mentions tablet works - it's always a Wacom, they're the prisma colours of the tablet world - expensive, but definatley worth it.

hmm..after spending £170 on a A1 drawing board..that isn't so expensive. *pats your tablet too*
oh, they come in different colours? the only ones i've seen were boring computer grey.

Wacom seem to produce all of their 'Graphire' model tablets in this sparkly blue. 'Tis pretty, and ooh, suits me, sir. I don't know if they do other colours though.

Old school, man. Very old school. Diggin' the contrast - the cels-style for the characters and the more intricate styling for the rest of the pic. The texture on the Tornado is awesome, and I really love the warm colors. I'm addicted to warm colors. It is very classic - reminds me of the days of the original Sega games, before Sonic's quills went wild and Tail got a super spiky hairdo to match. XD +Fave.

I did wonder, good to see some constructive criticism. I played with it a lot, but just left it as how you see it. He was originally blue and it really didn't look right, so I guess I over emphasised the warm tones of the image. Thanks for the comments

I try to make an effort to offer something constructive in every comment I make, no matter how hypocritical it may be. I guess I just notice things more with other people's work than when I'm blinded by self-pride in my own work XD. So basically, you're welcome.

It's nice to see people giving constructive criticism around here, it doesn't happen often and I fully support your take on commenting on other people's work. Feel free to continue to do so if you see things wrong with my artwork, it's the only way we improve!

Very old-school imgae, what with the designs of Sonic, Tails and the plane. The background looks so realistic, it's amazing, and very effective shading techniques here (as usual).

That is so darned beautiful! The lighting effects are so cool around the characters and the Tornado. Those clouds are very well done as well! And the way you've drawn it all somehow reminds me of Richard Elson's style. This picture is gorgeous. Superb work!

YES I FUCKING LOVE YOU. You have no idea how angry I've been getting with the recent bursts of sonic and other such characters being uploaded, most of them are new and i don't like them. *stuborn* You have just restored my faith in DA, that people DO actaully remember 'back in the day' when there was sonic and tails and knuckles and that was it, and they were fighting a 'dr robotnik' not a 'mr eggman'. Ah those were the days, I loved that Biplane, not like that stupid great spaceship they gave tails now. lol *le rant* This is just a wonderful piece that has lightened my mood ^o^
