If alicorns can get pregnant and birth other alicorns just like any other race, does that mean that there's an alicorn population somewhere that we've never heard of? Or have Celestia and Luna simply been alone and unwilling/unable to have any children? Is ascending magic students to Princess-hood Celestia's answer to lacking a family? Does that mean that Twilight is an "artificial" alicorn rather than a "natural" one? Does that make her better, because she earned it? Did Cadance secretly have a unicorn foal and then quickly zap it with alicorn-ification magic? Is that why Flurry's wings are so big?

Personally, I found the ''SUDDENLY ! Alicorn Baby Princess !'' idea there, just... just dumb. Like, lifting my arms in the air trying to think of the 'Why?'- level of dumb.
I mean, with Twilight, it already had been somewhat hard... as it was out-of-left field and rather unnecessary, but whatever... At least THERE it had some reasons, some *worth*.
Now... They are figuratively popping them out like eggs from a chicken. -_-
I can hear ''Well, Cadence is an alicorn, that make sense !''... ... ...We had 4 alicorns. 2 of which are of unknown origin(and lived thousands of years), and 2 that were ''elevated'' to alicorn-status. You're gonna tell me that, in thousands of years, NONE of the Princesses ever had 'sex' ? Or, is it like a state secret, and there are in fact hundreds of alicorns somewhere else in the world ?
Or, is it that ONLY alicorn-made ponies can have children ? Are the Celestia and Luna sterile (that would be a depressing thought) ?
(Also, the design of that baby is ugly. The Cakes' babies where much better... less ''You will die because of the amount of sugar put into this creature'', you know ?)

Well if you read the Journal of the Two Sisters they make it sound like alicorns were a normal, perhaps slightly rarer then normal, race.
And there is the theory that they were killed off and the two sisters were the only ones left.

My theory on Alicorns:
Only two were natural born: the goddesses Luna and Celestia. Throughout the centuries, particularly during Luna's banishment, 'mortal Alicorns' were created when they harnessed a power that few others could. Cadance, a Pegasus, harnessed the power of Love to defeat an evil pony, which earned her a horn. Twilight Sparkle, a Unicorn, harnessed the magic of Friendship and earned her wings.
This...baby...is either the first natural-born Alicorn in thousands of years and will be immortal...or isn't supposed to be an Alicorn...or, given that her parents are mortal, is the first "natural born mortal Alicorn" in history.
Either way, the baby is "special".
