Description I thought up this method quite recently. Up till now I've been drawing knots using CorelDraw, and cutting all the lines into little sections so that they overlap correctly (it's impossible to get two objects to appear interwoven - one has to be entirely on top or vice versa, so you have to cut them into more pieces).

This method is so much faster, and results in a raster image, although you can choose how high-res you want it to be.

This tutorial is written with CorelDraw and CorelPhotopaint in mind, although the technique should transfer perfectly well to Illustrator and Photoshop with some slight terminology differences.

Enjoy!!

This seems faster than the way I do it in Illustrator, but you end up with a raster image. I'm not familiar with Corel, but in Illustrator I could duplicate the knot (onto a new layer) make the reversal, and then use a compound shape to mask out the areas I wanted to hide, giving you the same effect without having to rasterize it. There must be a similar mask in Corel Draw? Maybe even easier, and better if you have to resize the image later.
Actually I tried it out and it works just fine...

That's a fantastic idea! There is an equivalent method in Corel Draw - make the mask object out of a large box covering the whole knot and a selection of holes, combine them together into one object, give it same fill as the background, and then use the PowerClip funtion in corel, placing the flipped copy 'inside' the mask object.

I've been playing with your technique and I'm going to post some experiments soon.
This was an amazing tutorial.

i have never used coreldraw before. it's my first attempt, so i found it a little hard to follow (like i can't even find the polygon tool, and i couldnt draw anything with the shape tool, etc). but i got the concept, and the tutorial is well done ^_^ thank you for sharing and im looking forward to learn how to use corel so i can try your tutorial!

Yeah that's the idea - should transfer reasonably well to other graphics apps. I've got fireworks knocking around so I might write a version for that.

I use Fireworks MX 2004 for drawing my knots, and am unfamiliar with Corel, so a lot of the terminology here was lost on me.

But, if I understand the underlying principle, it is ingenious. Use two copies of the pattern, layered, each layer having opposite crossings (that is, an under crossing in one layer will be over in the second), then erase incorrect crossings on the top layer, allowing the correct one to show through.

Thanks for sharing this innovative approach!
