Description
“ Shattered”Three pencil drawing framed separately, drawings one and three (8” x 8”) drawing two (8” x 14”)
This is the completed triptych titled “Shattered”. This is how it would be presented; I have posted the first and second drawings (panels) separately. The third drawing works within the triptych but it is so much like the first one I decided not to bore anyone by posting it separately.
Without getting in too much of an explanation there is a nod towards the crucifixion, and an altarpiece, But with an object we are familiar with, but just sweep away without ever really looking.

Your gallery is making me pretty giddy. Such excellent technique and choice of concepts. It's a shame that people limit you to the realm of "photorealism" because I'm certain that isn't your goal. If an artist wanted something to be photorealistic, they would just take a darned photo. There's a process inherent in the act of drawing from life, the disassembling of visual information, the choice to describe or not describe that information, and once you have the skills necessary to draw whatever you want, what is it you choose to draw and dissect?
What I'm trying to say is, it's just as much about the act of drawing as it is the about drawing itself.
Thanks so much for sharing your work. I'll be watching for more pieces and your thoughts on the subject.

Better late than never... you are absolutely right, photorealism in itself is a snoozed fest, I am interested in the techniques used but there has to be more interesting concepts and that’s what I am exploring. Thanks so much.

beautiful, ive been doing my best working from life, nothing on da though, i use graphite and on occasion charcoal. What do you prefer? I notice in this drawing you have really dark values, if this is graphite, how did you do that? Also i notice all your work is very precise, i can never achieve that quality because of the grain of the paper, what do you use?

I use graphite, I suck in charcoal cant control it. The dark background is just graphite, I use a very small size pencil .5 and .3 (softness B and 2B) of to accomplish this, the small leads keep from indenting the drawing board and leave no visible lines or the shine you get with larger wood incased pencils. I draw in small circles over numerous hours; an average drawing of this type can take from 100 to 200 hours, much of it spent on the background. An important part to this is spraying very lightly with mat fixative when it’s competed; this gets rid of any shine and inconsistencies. I need to work on the background when the humidity is constant, if I work one day with high humidity and then low you can really notice the difference of how the graphite reacts on the paper, so I work in a controlled studio with a level of humidity at about 40%. The technique with 6B and then going over it with hb works good to but its never really worked for me

I feel awfully redundant telling you how talented you are and how much pleasure it gives me to look at your work but I've done so anyway. The small rock tied above the bulb intact made me smiling, it was comically threatening.

Wow!!! You are definatly a master at drawing what you see! I struggle with that (look too much at my drawing and not enough at what i'm drawing... if ya get my drift)... But this is so skillfully done! Very photographic in quality! Amazing!!! God chose well to give a such an amazing gift of art to someone who uses it well.

Well, I've never paid much attention to a light bulb. Espescially a shattered one, other than to make sure I didn't leave any shards on the floor for my bare feet to find later. But your amazing work brings light bulbs into a whole 'different light'.

First of all preface a hostel statement as “in my opinion” for I think you are not the judge on what is or is not art. That’s not only presumptuous but rather lame.
Second, its up to the individual artist to say for him or herself what moves them to create in the first place, therefore the act of creating “art” is steeped in a personal artistic language that can not be judged be others.
Third the art word still has many possibility nothing is exhausted from realism to abstraction the paths are far from being totally explored. Any person who pigeon holes themselves into a single “ism” is doomed not the experience art in all its power and beauty.
Crudity, I would not nor could I do what you do, but it would be far from me to judge if you create art or not, that’s up to you. Please have some courtesy and work on yourself before you flame the rest. I have long ago stopped being impressed by art school psychobabble.

if I would show a drawing of that kind in my school (yeah I am still in there) they would kill me for copying socialism art style
I know I can't say such words here or I doubt I know english that good, but what I mean is
you should carry every comment, not only "OMG it's so freakin cool"
what I couldn't see on your pictures (and I don't mean it's on mine though) was value of shadows, dominate of contrasts... you know, it's just like drawing of something you saw, there is no soul I could see, but if there is, I am sorry, I'm just blind

I am always happy for someone to speaks their mind, I am not beating the drum of realism or any other ism. My point only is art is very big and there much room to grow and explore. Your professors don’t want you to be a “slave” to the illusion of the real and that’s their job.
My point here is to celebrate an object and find beauty in the simply unobserved. A photo will take only the picture but the act of drawing forces you into being very intimate with every part of this object, through this process I understand light, reflection, refraction and shadow so much more. Thank you for answering my points and I appreciate your candor.

i love the third shot (the one on the left) its detailed wiht the fractures in the piece of the burnt bulb. yet another one of your pieces that i love, which is not hard to believe at all.
