Description
9” x 6”Fifty-four Trips Around the Sun
This is the smallest portrait drawing I have ever done; it’s the size of a hand. Most of my work is huge (four to five foot) I had to really draw in a different manner which took time to get used to. What fascinated me was the hand, I was pinching a black cloth with my thumb and forefinger giving it an almost arthritic look and the bald head was great to draw and l liked the look, but my wife hated it so now I have long hair again.
Here is the size example

I love this, technically brilliant and I really like the pose and how it is mostly dark but with your face and arm appearing in the light.

You're right. Those two different scales require very different techniques. Covering space and accounting for the subtle changes in light in such a small area using the same pencil tip that you always do. It must have been... well. I don't know but you said it. Got time to get used to.
But now, would you say moving from large to small scale, technique-wise, freedome-wise, and mental-space-wise, would be reductive and limiting? Or would you say some aspects change and others don't?
etc?

both have there limits and down falls im not sure if i would be happy doing the small ones but it sure is easier on the wallet when framing time comes

so atmospheric! I'll bet you got excited when your beard first turned white so you could show off being able to render it like that

Armin,
I think what I love about your work most, other than the tremendously rich detail so beautifully conveyed, is your ability to flawlessly render darker values very accurately(i.e. the majority of this piece appears to be black, but when observing closely around the neckline, one can see slight variations in these darker values). Even in a piece like this with dramatic lighting, I think I appreciate the subtle value changes even more.

Stunning portrait, as always.
I continue to admire your delicate pencilwork, your keen attention to detail, and your ability to capture the gesture of a moment as it really is, with painstaking dedication to that honest representation of any subject. It's always a treat to see a new work of yours - thank you so much for sharing it with us. :3

very moody and nicely lit - has to rank up there with my all time favs of yours - something very powerfull about a smaller work like this with stripped down elements .. even the lack of hair on your noggin - image appears damn near actual size on my screen hear which is fun to wrap my head around

drawings small was a challenge and for the letters i get that say well you draw well because you draw big.......what a lot of shit. bigger smaller its observation, its knowledge its a work ethic and if i can approach art i need a great concept, which isn't always there. hope all is well with you take care my friend

staying good and busy here Armin .. and i couldnt agree more with that statement - each size be it working very big or very small comes with its own set issues and challenges - seeing some of those portrait miniturists who painted striking portraits in watercolor on vellum, some no bigger then a dime .. now that takes skill!

Was there any sense of "disconnect" if that would be the right way to put it? By that I mean your work often engages the viewer by allowing us to look into the eyes. This portrait is very 90 degrees. But on the other hand, you were drawing yourself, so you were always right inside of that head and looking as mindfully as possible through the visible eye. I was wondering if you had any thoughts to share about that?
Exceptionally well done and definitely you go beyond portraiture & representation as always. Beautiful in so many details and structural/compositional details - such as the light catching the arm hair is an inverse counterposed echo of the terminator line of stubble on the skull

good question i have never done a portrait in profile and was wondering if it would disconnect me with the "self" in the end it does but it also ads mystery and aloofness to the drawing which gives it a different strength

Armin, you know how much I love your work. And there is so little to add that had not been rightfully said over and over again. So I add all of that and then some.
What fascinates me is the additional direction I think to see in your work since some time. Whereas in the past, for me at least, the background has given a lot of drama and additional impact to your most excellent portraits, I feel you to bring that impact now more and more into the portrait itself. I sincerely love what I see.

i think that the background where starting to be over-thought, now im not done with them but they need to be reborn. next its the largest drawing i have ever done and its a tree piece 80" x 45"

Will be definitely looking forward to this 'majestic' piece. A tree drawing in that size - and with the complexity I know from you - will take quite some time, patience, perserverece, dedication ...... But if you were not up to that, who is?????????????????????????????????????
