2DForever(Proper title: "Chell [Redacted] - Test Subject #1498)
Who’s played Portal 2 yet? Pretty much everyone?
It’s pretty damn good.
One of my favourite moments in Portal 1 was when you realised (looking through your own portals) that you are playing as this girl, Chell (pronounced like ‘bell’, not ‘shell’ apparently).
Normally if you play a female lead, games aren’t very subtle about it – but with Portal you could of gone the whole game without knowing that and it’ll make no difference. And in her strange silent ways I think that’s what makes her such a great character – she could be anything.
I’ve recently been obsessing over the detail put into Portal 1 and 2, especially with Valve’s ‘Alternate Reality Games‘ they added to bridge the first and second game. This naturally led to a Portal themed picture. There’s been quite a bit of fanart already, so I thought I’d focus more on Chell herself essentially being a prisoner of Aperture Science. She’s just a little beaten up after some testing.
Bonus: I also did a variant with Source Engine style eyes…

I can't even begin to express my love for this piece. It's so simple, but at the same time there's so much character showing through everything. I wish this was my picture on my state ID XD

Haha, I guess it could pass for your ID if you've been beat up after doing many days of testing
Thanks for the nice comment!

This is really good art! And you pictured Chell if the expression that I imagine she have on the entire game, like "shut up, robots.."

Ohh, I spotted this one on somebody's tumblr the other day and was really glad to see some good Chell loving for once - most people make her look like a made up lady because of what the second installment did to her design, but this feels more like a nod toward Portal1!Chell. She felt a little harder somehow. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised to come here and find that you made it after all; you've really got a hand for this <3 Always a pleasure being reminded I've got you watched.

I wasn't at all surprised to see loads of fan art of Chell as soon as Portal 2 came out because of her new prettier appearance... Although I must admit I do like the new look - I just don't believe she'd be that pristine! Hence this picture I guess...
Thanks for the kind words as ever Would love to know which Tumblr blog you found it on?

Apparently there's a poster in Portal2 on which Cave Johnson explains that test subjects no longer bleed, because their blood has been replaced with gasoline. Apropos nothing. I mean, after the manual wall override, I'm just about as certain as you that Chell would be slightly banged up as well, hu.
Also, I think I was just browsing through the million pages under the "portal" tag? But if I come across it again I'll give you a holler? I just think it was someone showing off nice art.

I love the look of this, you can definitely see the tenacity in the way you've portrayed her, especially the eyes - speaking of eyes, that source version makes me shudder in mild terror.

It presents the following text:
Chell [redacted]

Rejected, do not test
Test Subject is abnormally stubborn.
Sorry to spoil it for others but it was a great added touch.

I knew there'd be some people doing that, so I thought it would be best to put something worthwhile in it!
Although the barcode isn't clear enough to scan, it's also got some hidden text linking to my website

Portal isn't subtle at ALL! All the 'females' in the game (female turrets, Chell, and GLaDOS) are all portrayed as highly intelligent and capable. Meanwhile, all the 'males' in game (Wheatley, defective turrets, crazy Aperture owner) all come off as being... Well, not so bright or downright faulty. It's a very bold social commentary, and I always giggle when I see misogynistic males talking about how great Portal is.
Anywho, this piece is great; I always love seeing more work of Chell, especially one's showing off her with an attitude. :>

To Be Far Turret dont really have a gender.

Neither does GLaDOS, or Wheatley, or ANY character but Chell, but the designers heavily imply gender identity in the robotic characters anyways. And (working) turrets are generally recognized as being of the female persuasion.

That's an interesting point - I hadn't really thought about the overall sex-balance of the characters in Portal and that's a good point.
My point was regarding Chell in particular though. I was saying you could of been completely unaware who you were playing as throughout the game. By giving her no character I think she really stands out.
It was in comparison to other female leads (the Lara Crofts of the game world) who are just too obvious and clichéd. I guess what I'm getting at, is that I prefer characters when they're a mystery, leaving endless possibilities of how great they could potentially be.

Roy-Fan-33 In reply to 2dforever [2011-05-22 20:07:14 +0000 UTC]
Ah, yes, I see your point now. The game really is subtle about not forcing, "Hey look, a girl!" on you. Which really is a step in the right direction I think for making female characters MUCH more playable in videogame. I actually like it when the main character sort of takes a back seat to everything - it really gives you the player a chance to fill in the role.
I think that's why I loved Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess.
