I have been looking for a tutorial like this for ages! I want to cosplay as Ulquiorra's 2nd release form for a friend who loves the character (it's a surprise for her) but I ran into some problems while planning. This has solved one of my problems (now I just need to figure out how to make his wings).

This may not be helpful for women with large breast (for example I'm a 40DDD ) but if You need too (or want to) one of the best binding for females from B-G (any smaller it won't matter and larger... They still look huge)
1. Put a circle shaped bandaid on your nipples and most or all of your areola
2. Take old strechy fabric or thick medical tape and start to wrap it
3. Start at the middle then bind up ward, then downward
I always use this (well unless I'm cosplaying as a large breasted female...very rare for me XD )

I normally use a selfmade binder when it's not a cosplay with an open chest, since bandages might slip. As I mentioned in the comment, the technique I introduced here is not for regular binding under closed shirts.

I'm a 34 C and I'm going to give this a try. I want to do a open shirt Ciel Phantomhive picture and been trying to think of a way to pull it off without the girls showing XD (I'll let you know how it goes)
I've used an ACE wrap to hide them when I did a test run of a goth/mafia boy and it worked alright but I wouldn't recommend it for an overly long stretch of time as I find it rather uncomfortable.

Abessinier In reply to LunaticsDelight [2012-05-25 23:08:59 +0000 UTC]
I hope it worked out fine!
ACE wrap is not a favourable method as it tends to tighten around the chest and there were even cases of broken ribs due to this. I recommend to sew your own binder out of strong but stretchy material or to buy a binder for binding under a closed shirt (never thought I'd use the word "bind*" so often in one sentence")...

A very nice, well written tutorial; can't wait to try it for Otakon this summer. Now, could this be used for just plain binding? Or would you only recommend this for open-shirt cosplay?

Abessinier In reply to mewakari13 [2012-03-10 21:30:42 +0000 UTC]
Thanks a lot!
And as I said in my comment, I would never recommend it for plain binding. It would be unnecessarily painful and I'd recommend using a regular binder instead.

uhmm... ><;; This may sound like a stupid question but;
If I bind for un-open shirt with bandages, is it still dangerous? As in using bandages to wrap around the chest.
sorry if it seems idiotic, I just started cosplaying late last year and Im really paranoid... ><;;;

Abessinier In reply to SekariNya [2012-03-07 10:42:32 +0000 UTC]
I would not use bandages that stick to our body and this ACE wrapping stuff could tighten more and make it hard to breathe (i just heard about it, though). I would recommend sewing a binder out of a very elastic fabric or buying a professional one. Binding in itself is not dangerous if its done right, with care and if you listen to your body signals, as in, take it off when it gets harder to breathe or just painful.
According to my gynecologist, binding does not increase the risk of breast cancer (at least not more than a simple push-up bra would) but I think its a question of your constitution. No human is the same

I'm definately going to test this out before doing any puuublic cosplays with it ahaha ;a; im so tempted but the character I want to do is completely shirtless rather than having an open shirt is it still wise? ofcourse I cant test it until i get the tape @~@ Is a fully shirtless one completely unwise you think?
I'm considerign if i do do it taking a skirt with me just encase
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Abessinier In reply to nerdaliztix [2012-03-02 10:48:41 +0000 UTC]
I don't think completely shirtless crossplay can ever look good, to be honest, since there are too strong anatomic differencesin men and women that would show, especially in the width of the chest. If you wear a shirt or a coat with shoulder pads inside that makes you wider, you can still achieve a manly look. That is impossible if you go bare-chest.
Another problem is that the tape might come off at the ends during the day. It might be a bit too revealing and simply look bad overall, so I wouldn't suggest it.

As I wrote in the comments, it has been reported that it will hurt and not look good from C-Cup on
I'm very sorry! If I was in your shoes, I would consider using a professional binder and wear a skin-colored zentai with airbrushed muscles on it! Or skin-colored pleather/latex!

It worked greatly~! The scotch didn't hurt at all, and it made me totally flat chested. XD It was quite troublesome for the photographs, because my hoodie was open and didn't cover the bending completely...But that's ok XD

AAAAAH ;A; Thank you so much for posting this! I've been planning a Tidus cosplay and I had no idea what to use for the open shirt, but thanks to this, I might be able to get it done now ^^
Also, I'm a 38 C. Do you think I would have a problem using this method?

Abessinier In reply to ReinaSasuke [2011-12-10 14:58:22 +0000 UTC]
A C-cup is always the point where things could work but are getting tough, as far as I know it from two friends. The chance that it will hurt and that there will be damage done ist much higher in this size-category but it always depends on the person :/
I don't know if I would suggest it for I don't know how it feels...

Thankfully for me, even though I'm a C cup, I'm still fairly small, so I guess it shouldn't be much of a problem. Thank you for getting back to me on this, too.

I have been using this method myself, I just find one thing wrong with it for practical use.
I find that putting tape all the way around the back is too restricting. You can't move your arms forward, and you risk popping the binding if you move too much. If you have an extra set of hands, have an assistant do the vertical strips on your shoulder blades as well as chest, and only wrap from the front to the shoulder blades.
I'd also like to point out that pasties applied first make the tape more comfortable. Also, in the event the binding should pop, it provides modesty, because the adhesive of the pasties will not peel away with the tape.
Otherwise it's a good tutorial! Someone I used to know and I used this same method in the photo taken here: [link] I'm Reno (redhead with the grey shirt) and we did this for a Yaoi panel.

Hummm I actually never experienced trouble with putting the tape all the way around- as I wrote, I only do this with one strip actually and for me it really does work fine - so it's good to receive feedback from you about the technique! Maybe it's because my whole chest is really small in size, so it does not feel restricting for me at all...do you use the same brand of tape(Kindmax sportstape, 5cm wide)?
As I said, I normally put tissue over the nipples to avoid the tape sticking directly to them.
It's a bit tricky to get your hands on pasties around here, so the idea never occured to me!
I hope you had fun at the panel
And thank you! My tutorial is probably not perfect but at the time I did it, the only other openchestbinding tutorial suggested to use ducttape on your tits. Which was the mainreason why I made this- to be the lesser evil actually

Yes, as I said, placing the tape directly on the most sensitive part of your breast could hurt a lot
