Really nice and helpful, I always love to see how artists actually start from a sketch and get to the amazing end-result. Great job!

Wow

I'm really interested in digital painting, but I've been struggling to find any good tutorials or information on how to make this stuff, this is really valuable to me!

I usually do fine until I have to add any detail/texture whatsoever, I just had no idea how it was done.

I think I'll give it another go. Hope my tablet stays in 1 piece this time

WOW Amazing! I need some tips though. How do you do the lense flare effect? I've been trying to put it in some of my pieces but It just doesn't seem to be as good as other peoples. I would love to learn how to perfect it to give that movie-esque look!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

abigbat In reply to aFletcherKinnear [2010-11-27 19:16:26 +0000 UTC]

I just paint the flare in with an airbrush (I can't remember what layer setting I use off the top of my head, probably linear burn)! It takes a bit of practice to get it looking natural - can be good to paint it straight (holding shift), then angle it around afterwards. Hope that vaguely helps

shadow-link [2010-08-27 14:45:36 +0000 UTC]

Very nice and moody, though the motion-blur looks odd to me.

His stance is stiff, defensive. The blur looks like he's pulling back but the distance to the Hydra and lack of blur on the rest of the body doesn't suggest retreat, just pulling the arm and leg back for no reason.

Maybe that's just me. Really dig it though.

abigbat In reply to shadow-link [2010-08-27 23:06:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man, the blur is just there to add dynamism, but you're quite correct; it doesn't make perfect sense there

did you use a tablet for this image??

Thank you!! I do indeed use a tablet for all my work (mouse doesn't really cut it for this stuff, too fiddly) - get a bamboo, that's what I'm using these days since my main tablet died

KOAX117 [2010-08-27 03:42:30 +0000 UTC]

hmmm. i'm not sure if i like it this way or flipped how you had it originally. can't decide.
zeratul came out awesome, for sure.
the background (could be my monitor) seems TOO saturated. at least right behind him. frame 7 has a nice feeling saturation to me for the background. since you're adding the mist factor and all and especially since its a dark and damper cave i would see the distance being less saturated.
the zerg i would've lighten up more or showed the browns a little more. Also pulling him more into the composition like you had originally. i feel like he's hugging the wall too much.

i think that's the first time I ever actually critiqued one of your pieces, heh.

definitely an awesome walkthrough, if i could get my tablet to work on my computer (the sensitivity is recognized in the tablet preferences but not in any programs) i'd be doing stuff like this. but i've given up on trying, it hates me haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

abigbat In reply to KOAX117 [2010-08-27 09:31:32 +0000 UTC]

I kept the saturation high just 'cause it's a Blizzard homage (and their work is always super saturated)! And I pulled the zerg back because he's really not the focus of the piece, just a sort of extra - I guess I could have pulled him out more. Cheers for the crits man!

That's odd about your tablet... I'm assuming you're setting pen pressure in Photoshop's brush settings? Other than that no idea haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KOAX117 In reply to abigbat [2010-08-27 16:42:35 +0000 UTC]

ok that saturation makes more sense now.

the only reason i would pull the hydralisk out more is to break up the composition. my art teachers back in high school always preached the rule of thirds. which i pretty much follow in most situations (sometimes having the focal point in the center is needed). since he's close to the center, making it so the bottom right is broken from the environment with the zerg - and now i'm ranting about stuff i'm sure you know better than me XD

yeah i have it set in photoshop like you normally would. whenever i put photoshop or any program that recognizes my tablet (3ds max mainly) it'll say something like "there is an issue with your tablet driver. please reboot your system. if the problem continues reinstall or update your driver" which i've done. one of my friends said it might be a microsoft human interface device driver conflicting with it, and i've tried messing with those, but no luck.

one this quarter of college is up and i'm break, i'm going to probably just back up all my data and reinstall windows for it <_<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

abigbat In reply to KOAX117 [2010-08-27 23:08:45 +0000 UTC]

Rule of thirds is extremely valid, I just went with a simple central composition for this one - the Zerg is just a detail to distract the eye. Which tablet and OS are you using?
