Description
Watchers Giveaway Prize - 2/3The second Watchers Giveaway Prize, this time for the great Kauriana , who won the Character Design slot.
When Kauriana asked me to draw her mage character, Haleth, all she had was this headshot of him: sta.sh/0h1tu2n571a So we talked about him a bit, and then I came up with some quick thumbnail designs for him: sta.sh/014154x8cyxs
I let Kauriana pick her favorite from the lineup, then I made some color variations from her final choice: sta.sh/028umv5ypjq2 Again, Kauriana got to choose her favorite one.
As you can tell, this picture has been a WIP for a while now, haha. I'm not really sure what happened - it just kept getting pushed back behind other pictures for some reason. Aside from the lateness, I'm still super happy with the final picture. Human characters are one of my favorite things to paint but, unfortunately, I don't get nearly enough chances to paint them. I also got a crash course in fire and clothing folds in this picture, which are both things that I need more practice with. I think I did pretty well considering the inexperience. (Though figuring that stuff out certainly added to the final time, haha ;D )
I hope you like it!

Beautifully done Pash!!! The hand in the foreground in drawn perfectly for this pic and I like the shapes you made with the shading on it (it has a very realistic appearance). The clothing shading is also very well done, especially with the way the chest is billowing out bc of the air beneath. Great work as always!

Thanks, Arfy!
The hands were pretty hard to do, mostly because I couldn't find a lot of references for hand armor. As far as I could tell, they would weld several pieces of metal together which would go over just the tops of the fingers, while the palm and undersides of the fingers were usually covered by just a glove. But I couldn't figure out how the finger armor stayed in place and actually bent with the finger. So, I added some metal ring/loop things to keep the finger armor moving with the fingers (though I found no actual historical proof that they did anything like that).

He turned out awesome!Β The fire effect is really something!Β Did you use a special brush to create that?

Thank you very much!
Well.... yes and no. See, I started out with a free-to-use stock photo for the fire, then I painted over it like crazy to make what you see here. You *might* be able to see the photo poking through in a few tiny spots, but 97% of what you're seeing is hand-painted with no special brushes. I'd love to use special brushes like everyone else seems to do, but Elements has super limited options for brushes, so I'm stuck with default brushes for the most part. I also used the lasso tool a whole bunch to make random "fiery" shapes.
I think the hardest part of the fire was the reddish fade-out at the bottom. I couldn't find any photo refs with a similar look, so I had to wing it.
Also, I forgot to thank you for your clothing tips in the description. Sorry about that. |D

Thank you very much!
I don't get a lot of chances to design characters, so this was a nice excuse to flex my design muscles. *flex* I wonder if people would be interested in character design commissions like this?

My pleasure!Β
Hahahah! I know what you mean! I'm sure people would be interested - they look wonderful! Perhaps if you want to open commissions for designs you might want to do one or two more examples?
(Design muscles looking very ship shape )Β

I don't think I'll have time to make more examples (real life stuff is coming up, ugh) but I do have another character design example here: aboveclouds.deviantart.com/artβ¦
So I at least have a human and a creature example to show people if/when I open for design commissions. ^^

Ahhh yeah real life is of course the priority, I totally sympathize there! What's coming up for you if you don't mind me asking? I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!
That's great though! As long as you have an example of both I'm sure you'll be fine! Β

Oh my word, thank you so much for doing this! I love the way the cloth and the fire and the lighting look together. Thanks a ton for all the patience as we worked out his design, he looks great!

You're welcome! I'm happy to hear that you like my interpretation of his design. You're free to use the clothing design as-is, or alter it to suit your tastes. I know that different people like different designs, so I don't mind if you alter the clothing or whatever. He's your character after all. ^^
