Description
Year: 2010Client: DC Comics
Media: Pencil & PITT pen on Strathmore Drawing Paper, then colored in Adobe Photoshop CS2
This is a Jade cover done for DC Comics, which ultimately won't be published. It happens; that's life as a freelancer. But YOU get to see it! Whee!
DC wanted a very specific design - the character flying at the reader against a white background.
******UPDATE*******
Due to the overwhelming number of people responding with variations on "I can't believe DC rejected this", I have to clarify something.
DC Comics did not reject this art. The art was accepted and I was paid. After I handed in the cover, I was told it wasn't going to be used for its intended purpose, so it they're holding on to it for a future use.

Oh, please, can you post a detail of her face in the original (left) image? I need to see the traces of the shadows!

I can see this being used as t-shirt and poster once the green lantern movie comes out, just you watch. Another great image, great foreshortening, which is tough to do. The eyes, lips and hand draw you in. Superb stuff.

I'm amazed by the way her face seems so real, though this green colour ! It doesn't look like "painted over" but inside her skin ^^ You're the Boss

Thanks! It's tricky doing characters with cool-colored skin - none of the usual methods of rendering skin apply (at least not easily).

It's strange, it seems painted on the verso of a pane of glass, the lines and the inks being on the recto.... very interesting, I wonder how you did it !

Great work as always. Lovely angle. Exudes sexyness.
What a shame they will not use it.
Off topic, I can't stand Jade new logo. Means nothing. I liked the green star from the Ordway desing.

Ah, well.. I hope they use it for a future cover/poster/ or even a DC cover girl statue^^
That would be neat!
Jade doesn't really get much love in the merchandising department..
Anyway, love it! It's a fantastic artwork

Jade's so hot (never mind that I have a thing for green girls. )
I first saw her in a flashback issue when Kyle first became Ion, and she was the only reason I wanted to start picking up Green Lantern comics, being a stalwart Marvel guy. My buddy who is a HUEG GL geek said she was either dead or MIA or something, I can't quite remember. So, unfortunately, interest lost.
Awesome pic though, DC had no sense in not using this, I probably would have picked it up.

neat to see both renditions,
I love her pose of angle like she is flying at the "camera"
gorgeous female
I like her green skin n dark hair
her hands are superb and good field of depth
she has a strong nose (of which I like) and great face-gorgeous eyes, lush strong lips, and bold eyebrows yet feminine

Can I use this as a reference for one of my flying characters?

AdamHughes In reply to guardian-diamond [2010-11-24 15:01:40 +0000 UTC]
If it's just for personal use and/or practice, have a blast.
If it's for profit, than please don't. It's best if you hunt down your own reference for paying or published work.
If you post your art based off of this on DA or anywhere on the web, courtesy dictates that you give me credit somewhere, as in "based on the art of Adam Hughes".

Hah, yeah profit, right (I make zero profit from my comic characters. Oil paintings maybe but yeh not the comic stuffs.)
And not to worry I always give credit where its due if I ever use references from/collab with fellow deviants .
... This is of course assuming I get around to it. But thank you for your reply .

Quick question for you: Was looking at the cover of a comic book I own of Powergirl and the cover art looks IDENTICAL to yours, unfortunatly I cannot find the artists' signature, so I was wondering if you've ever done a cover for a Powergirl comic book cover so I can find out if it is your cover? I'll desribe cover details to specify picture more if you have done more than one picture for a cover.

How do you approach such extreme foreshortening? Photo ref or primative shapes or both?

A bit of both. Reference was used mainly for the lighting.

I could never take away from the magic that is AH!, but as an artist I know also that getting good at something also takes lots of practice and time combined with natural talent and desire to improve. I love watching your youtube videos of sketching at cons, you have a great vision of the figure before you even lay a line down...or maybe it just appears that way. I struggle with drawing figures. Anyway...love your work, can't get enough of it.

man, first time you get get to draw Jade and they turn it down? they should be grateful you did ti at all!!! shame on DC for being afraid of something different, fresh, not to mention smoking. Now i`m scared; where is that company going to if it doesn`t want youre stuff... first GL now this. All paranoics aside, was this for a cover of JLA or JSA?

That makes me feel so much better. This is such a ridiculously difficult pose to pull off (which you did beautifully), that I couldn't help but knee jerk into disbelief.
I hope they can utilize it to its fullest potential.
