Description Year: 2010
Client: DC Comics
Media: Pencil & PITT pen on Strathmore Drawing Paper, then colored in Adobe Photoshop CS2

This is a Jade cover done for DC Comics, which ultimately won't be published. It happens; that's life as a freelancer. But YOU get to see it! Whee!

DC wanted a very specific design - the character flying at the reader against a white background.

******UPDATE*******

Due to the overwhelming number of people responding with variations on "I can't believe DC rejected this", I have to clarify something.

DC Comics did not reject this art. The art was accepted and I was paid. After I handed in the cover, I was told it wasn't going to be used for its intended purpose, so it they're holding on to it for a future use.

It's a shame they didn't want to use it... I love the visual flow of it from her hand in the foreground through her hair to her receding hand, and the expression of determination on her face is excellent as always.

do you ink it on photoshop, or do you just set the levels ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamHughes In reply to PowaPlaya [2010-11-24 15:10:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't really understand the question... but I did not ink it in Photoshop.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PowaPlaya In reply to AdamHughes [2010-11-24 19:27:02 +0000 UTC]

You don't ink it in Photoshop, but do you change the Levels settings(to make grey lines darker, even black, for example)? Because your inked lines look so black, like done in Photoshop. It's a mistery to me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamHughes In reply to PowaPlaya [2010-11-24 21:33:03 +0000 UTC]

OK, here's what I do.

I scan my line art in Grayscale mode, to capture all the subtleties.

I then go in and make feathered selections of various lines, and then use either Threshold or Brightness/Contrast (with the Contrast cranked all the way up) to "Bitmap" the lineart to get the values black and white with no gray pixels. I do this over the entire piece, one area at a time.

You can do this all at once, but I prefer to go through and do specific areas one at a time. That way I can really finesse the scan and get best 'scan' by the time I am ready to color.

I don't use Levels for this function, although I 'm sure you could.

~AH!~

It's actually open in the lineart. It's just that I made the lips lineart in to colors, and kept the open mouth solid black.

AdamHughes In reply to gahlaktus117 [2010-11-24 15:05:51 +0000 UTC]

Not at all! She-Hulk and Jade are dangerously similar.... green skin & hair with purple white in their costumes. She-Hulk has purple in her costume, and while Jade doesn't, I had to give the white of her outfit SOME kind of color temperature. I picked purple because it goes with green nicely.

yeah nice one complimentery colours are always useful for eye candy.I'm more of a marvel fan you see and not very knowledgable of the lesser DC characters, from my Dev-watch page it looked like she-hulk just recieved a cosmic 1-up or something

They did not use it for its intended purpose which is what I meant. I certainly did not mean that it was rejected because of some flaw! Hell, I faved it two seconds after I saw it. I bet those that said something similar did not mean that DC hated it but that they rejected using it right away. Your name sells and I associate it with quality. DC's choice seems like bad business to me, since I've never even heard of Jade before but would buy this cover of her in a heartbeat. I'd even pay $3.99 for it and I'm praying it will be a variant, soon..

Doing crosshatching on a woman's face is very dangerous , but the way you' ve done it made Jade's faced very natural ! And I thought you couldn't surprise me , I was really really wrong ! That's what I like in your art , realistic, naturalistic art mixed with comic book rules !
