Description Year: 2010
Client: DC Comics
Media: Pencil & PITT pen on Strathmore Drawing Paper, then colored in Adobe Photoshop CS2

This is a Jade cover done for DC Comics, which ultimately won't be published. It happens; that's life as a freelancer. But YOU get to see it! Whee!

DC wanted a very specific design - the character flying at the reader against a white background.

******UPDATE*******

Due to the overwhelming number of people responding with variations on "I can't believe DC rejected this", I have to clarify something.

DC Comics did not reject this art. The art was accepted and I was paid. After I handed in the cover, I was told it wasn't going to be used for its intended purpose, so it they're holding on to it for a future use.

How do you feel about putting so much effort into the line work, only to sometimes paint over it?

Well, the line work is just the bones of the final color piece. I plan on incorporating the line art into the colors, so it's no different than the underpainting done by an oil painter or the wood framing of a house.

Word. I didn't think DC stiffed you on the bill
I know sometimes there're last minute changes in editorial that lead to things like this happening. I encountered it before on an Adventure Comics cover I did, where a character I had drawn on the cover got cut from the book, and so needed to be subtly transformed to resemble a different character in the book. Se la vi.

Looking forward to seeing Jade in print down the line!

Well that makes sense. I thought DC might have been on something that was blurring their vision!
'Cause the picture is top notch! Ur art is so fined tuned...

Okay, that makes more sense. It's really inconceivable that they would reject it out of hand. I look forward to seeing what they do with the art.

Awesome piece. The weaving of her hair, and her blue-purple-ish suit caught my eye.
