Description
A Voodoo cover I did for Wildstorm back in the 90s. One of the last painted covers I did before going to digital colors. It's probably 15" X 25", water-based mixed media on illustration board.
It was a rush job; Wildstorm called me up on a Friday and needed it on a Monday, so I did this one in a 48-hour marathon I think, no sleep whatsoever. I hate those.
The original cover artist disappeared, so I was asked to do the covers for issues 2-4. He had started the miniseries with an Art Nouveau design for the first issue cover, which is probably why WS called me to help out. The fact that Voodoo is a superhero who is a stripper (I know, CLASSY!) in her alter ego hours probably had nothing to do with it, right?
Even though it was a nightmare, I really enjoyed this piece, and is one of the rare occasions where I had a lot of fun on a job.

I can't remember the comics, but I remember the covers. Thanks for a touch of nostalgia and a beautiful cover to boot.

The perspective is believable. I'm really digging the way the armpits and breasts came out, you got the valleys just right. Wonderful job!

This was rushed!!!?? Jesus friggin Christ, man! Does not seem like it at all! One of my favorites but only because of the fact that you use watercolors for this one. We need more art like this. Its more alive. Alot more than that Alex Ross' watercolor stuff.

Lemme say this... It's no wonder I'm captivated every time I see your art Mr. Hughes, but for some reason I thought I'd never be astonished again like the first time I experienced it through the pages of Ghost #1...
With this one, you just did man.
p.d. How could I have missed such a cover... It's been almost 15 years!

This cover is what turned me on to your art. I bought the comic purely for the art. I know I'm supposed to be appreciating the writer too, but there you go.
Thanks for all your inspirational work.

The setting really supports her. I love all the extras: the christ skull, black cat, old radio, and the dollar bill. Who knew that while The Shadow was playing in the everyday kitchen, the stripper/voodoo goddess was on the prowl?

I love this cover. I think the cover was the reason why I bought the series.
Certainly it was at least partially responsible for inspiring me to pick up drawing again.

"Erzulie" was the name of the issue's story. You'll have to ask Alan Moore what it means...

Actually, it's the name of a loa, the protector of women I think. I'm not sure protector is the right name and I haven't read the comics, but it's a nice cover which replicate well the noodle style ^^
