Description
A Voodoo cover I did for Wildstorm back in the 90s. One of the last painted covers I did before going to digital colors. It's probably 15" X 25", water-based mixed media on illustration board.
It was a rush job; Wildstorm called me up on a Friday and needed it on a Monday, so I did this one in a 48-hour marathon I think, no sleep whatsoever. I hate those.
The original cover artist disappeared, so I was asked to do the covers for issues 2-4. He had started the miniseries with an Art Nouveau design for the first issue cover, which is probably why WS called me to help out. The fact that Voodoo is a superhero who is a stripper (I know, CLASSY!) in her alter ego hours probably had nothing to do with it, right?
Even though it was a nightmare, I really enjoyed this piece, and is one of the rare occasions where I had a lot of fun on a job.

Nice! I love traditional media so much better, even tho your work is so tight they both look identical.... I love the little moles on her legs.....or you should clean your scanner one.

All the little flecks and dots are intentional and are part of the original art.

I just love how you can always give your work this amazing 'art nouveau' feel. Mucha himself would be proud. How do you do it, Adam? God!
And tell me how I'm supposed to stop 'faving' your artwork
Cheers
P.S.: I'm a huge fan!

Fabulous, the entourage is wonderful and the character looks sensual but also a bit comical (dont know if that was the idea but I like it anyway).

I bought these issues back then not to read them, I bought them only for the covers. I may still have this somewhere! In a time of cheap Photoshop coloring on most Image comics, these Voodoo covers were all so charismatic.

I worked at a comic shop when this one shipped. The owner had me put it in the adult section!?! I tried to argue... "the guy that wants the adult book is gonna be REAL dissapointed in this, and the dude looking for wildcasts is gonna miss it!" alas, he won with "we are in the bible belt and its an election season, it'll take one mom through that door and I'm closed, and I'm the boss" ugh.

I very much like the fact you continued the Mucha style to the Image "i" logo. And I'm also drawn to all the little spots of colour.

Wow, you WERE the one who did this?? Christ! I hadn't seen this illustration for ages - I remember this hanging on the wall of my former roommate's bedroom wall back in the late nineties.
I never stopped enjoying looking at the beautiful coloring and lines. Now I know who did this piece... awesome!!

Standard painted cover rate, if I recall. At that stage in my career, I didn't have tons of creative freedom, so my mega-fucking compensation was a VERY free hand.

Cheers for posing this because it shows how f*&$@ing brilliant you are with traditional paint as well...
Fabulous piece and a good reminder to younger artists that a deadline is not an optional thing, its an absolute. This marvelous artwork also shows that even under the most ghastly deadline a trained hand, skilled eye, masterful use of an airbrush and ink was all you had at your disposal to meet the clock..
AND there was no "undo" button.

Well, it was a rush job for Wildstorm. I guess since I crammed 6 8-hour workdays into a 2-day period, it's TECHNICALLY not a rush job for me. I didn't draw or paint any faster than usual...

This work is amazing! 48 hours and with no "undos" (i.e. photoshop)?
I've read what you and Joe Jusco said about this not being a glamorous job as we all think it is.
I don't think there is such a thing when the term "job" is applied.
At least you work on something you love.
I've done several allnighters out of pure fun and pleasure. And I'm a designer with a desk-paperwork-job I really hate.
You're blessed twice. First because of your talent and amazing skills and second because you're paid to do it!
keep up the amazing posts

I take it my question is just one of the many and will probably pass you by but here goes anyway:
I seem to sense strong influences from Mucha in your work?
Anyway, it's wonderful as always. You've managed to achieve almost a flawless technique ( something I myself aspire to and who knows, one day I might get there too ) and it's a delight to view it. I'd say keep up the good work but I'm pretty certain you will anyway
