Description
A Voodoo cover I did for Wildstorm back in the 90s. One of the last painted covers I did before going to digital colors. It's probably 15" X 25", water-based mixed media on illustration board.
It was a rush job; Wildstorm called me up on a Friday and needed it on a Monday, so I did this one in a 48-hour marathon I think, no sleep whatsoever. I hate those.
The original cover artist disappeared, so I was asked to do the covers for issues 2-4. He had started the miniseries with an Art Nouveau design for the first issue cover, which is probably why WS called me to help out. The fact that Voodoo is a superhero who is a stripper (I know, CLASSY!) in her alter ego hours probably had nothing to do with it, right?
Even though it was a nightmare, I really enjoyed this piece, and is one of the rare occasions where I had a lot of fun on a job.

...No digital color here? You can't be human.

Woah! This is as good as your digital work! Not suggesting for a moment that digital surpasses traditional media, but this is flawless. The styling is spot on too.

Well, usually when people aske me for Photoshop advice, the first thing I say is "Go learn how to paint. Come back in 5 years and I'll teach you everything I know about Photoshop in 20 minutes."
Not that I'm any great painter, but the royal road to digital success is basic illustration & painting skills.

Amen. Then we have to deal with those who thumb their noses at digital painting as being cheap.

So many Nouveau style illustrations are a simple ripoff of Mucha, that I can appreciate the ways in which this cover takes the style and applies it to a contemporary use. The risquΓ© pose, the broad shoulders and other details make it new and balance out the ultra-femenine lines, shapes and colors of the old style.

the shading is so nice on her skin
Is that all watercolour washes? or did you need to use an airbrush or something?
I never understand how people can create such nice gradients of tone with traditional mediums.
Good job tho. The boobs look HOT =] good to see quite realistic big boobs in a cover they have weight!!! =]

It's airbrush. By water-based mixed media, I mean: airbrush, watercolor, color pencil.

Thanks for the reply =]
I was always too scared of the airbrush, quite an investment, and id imagine itd take a while to grow comfortable with. Looks worth it all tho.
I suppose if i hadnt had photoshop since i was about 13, things may have been different. Computers are so boring in comparison.
and again .... good boobs =]

It's not like it's a masterpiece of airbrush work.... I just used it to give me an even coat of color and some nice graduations. If I was less lazy I could've done it with watercolors...

Was this airbrushed acrylic? Just curious about what specific form of water-based media you were using.

I remember this cover well. This (and all the rest of the ones for this series) I would spend quite some time looking at in the comic store. Although, she was so hot and so sexy I questioned getting them. Just the act of getting comics at all as a teenager had automatically put me on the potential lesbian list - and frankly I was unsure if I wanted to get anything to reinforce those notions.
But I did eventually buy them as a set - I remember the interiors being alright - but those fantastic covers still make me think of a days long gone.
Oh, and as an end of long comment note, I met my husband Adam a while later and the potential lesbian spell was broken. Yay!

Interesting how one of the few super heroines out there that actually works professionally in the adult entertainment industry has a superhero costume that isn't much different from the other female school teachers and corporate executives out there in comic book land fighting crime.
