Description
The third page (of five) of the "Basic Training" tutorial I did for WIZARD magazine, back in the halcyon year of 1997... This part's from the "speed line" section, featuring Gen13's Roxy beating the snot outta Grunge. Time was very, very short on this feature, with no time for inking, so I did this "story" solely in pencils.The art style of the piece has not aged gracefully, but the commentary on speed lines is prolly still relevant, IMHO.
Much thanks to "Megasad"/ Simon B. for the scan, as I no longer possess a copy of the issue in question...

I'm remembering this sequence now -- I think I actually have this issue in my piles-- er, files somewhere.
I love Grunge's facial expression in that third panel: it really brings the word "perusal" to life.
("Scrutiny" also comes to mind...)

Good god speedlines is a hassle to learn how to draw correctly.
I don't even know what a "french curve" IS and I manage to get dislocated even though I've set a vanishing point... XD
Not to mention I have no way to get any advanced art supplies.
The worst part over all is that when you have the "thinning line" and all that stuff down its still a matter of keeping the energy down on the paper while not ruining the OTHER stuff on the page.
Its an art in itself really. :\
