Description The second page (of five) of the "Basic Training" tutorial I did for WIZARD magazine, back in the halcyon year of 1997... Time was very, very short on this feature, with no time for inking, so I did the artwork solely in pencils. Note the cameo appearances by Gabrielle and Jamadagni from my TITANS: SCISSORS, PAPER, STONE one-shot, which came out around the same time as this piece.

The art style of the piece has not aged gracefully, but some of the commentary might still be worthwhile.

Much thanks to "Megasad"/ Simon B. for the scan, as I no longer possess a copy of the issue in question...

I'd like to note for the record that a Wizard editor added that rather puzzling line in the last paragraph: "That's the main reason that most manga are in black and white." Obviously, that's NOT why manga are B&W; I'm not entirely sure what they were driving at with that sentence, to be honest. 'Tis a mystery.

I remember going through a 'manga phase' in my drawing style 2-3 years later, when I became engrossed with 'Urusei Yatsura,' hence my name.

I would often refer to this issue of Wizard for information about drawing in the style, though I jumped off the manga-drawing bandwagon when my regular human figure imagery was beginning to fall apart.

Lovely stuff... I guess it is good and bad that artists are their own worst critics

I've noticed that you're not pleased with your old work. I suppose nobody ever is. I still love your style from this era, though. Actually, I just finally picked up a copy of Scissors, Paper, Stone the other day. One of the few I didn't have.

I remember this portion most of anything from this article simply because you showed the under-musclulature of the 'anime/manga' style face. I felt at the time with a LOT of artists attempting to do manga style art with no real grounds in fundamental drawing or anatomy, that this will peg for them that knowing the basics helps in any genre of art.
