Description This is a pin-up for the comic Mice Templar by Bryan J.L. Glass and Mike Oeming. To my delight, it was printed as the illustration that accompanied the Foreword on the second hardcover collection of the series.

It was an honor to do, really. Templar is easily the best sword-swinging fantasy comic on the market right now, in my opinion. Definitely in my top-five favorite fantasy stories of all time. My love for this series is deep, and not just because Bryan is one of my very good friends.

When choosing an image to illustrate for the pin-up, it was an easy choice to go for "one-arm" Leito (my favorite character). As a bonus, the sequence where he leads the imprisoned mice on a revolt to attempt an escape from the dungeon was such a great, moody scene that it wasn't hard to find a dramatic shot to encapsulate it.

This is in my style, which is quite different from series artists Mike Oeming and Victor Santos. Having never done much work on mice, I looked back at my favorite mice movies ever: Great Mouse Detective and Secret of NIMH. The rest came out on the page. Hope you like it!

Glad you found it! DA changed the way their links worked a while back and it broke all the old links. I'll go through and fix them when I get the time. I'm also thinking of updating the old meme and bringing it up to the present. We'll see if I can!

I got to meet Glass in a comic book shop in Folsom, PA (the name of the store is Comic Universe :: PLUG :: Β It was when the first issue of his Thor was debuting...got that signed #1, yo LOL) Β Really down to earth guy.

His Mice Templar series always looks so cool: I really should read them one day....

You Should! Bryan is one of my dearest friends, but even if I'd never met the guy, Mice Templar would be in my Top 5 all-time favorite fantasy comics. Everything about it works so well, and it's coming to a conclusion that seems like it will be unbelievably epic!

This piece was defined by the lighting. I saw the lighting in my head first, the rest developed from there.

I am completely blown away by this. I'm sorry I can't say more right now but I'm just speechless, it's that beautiful. I must read this comic.
(And, I know The Secret of NIMH has been brought up already, but Leito's sword really reminds me of Jenner's with the wavy blade.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to dobergirl102 [2010-06-23 04:59:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... I totally just "borrowed" Jenner's sword for that one. In fairness, that's an AWESOME sword for a bad-guy to carry, and Jenner was a mean rat and Leito is escaping from (and stole his weapon from) mean rats. Ergo, vis a vis, concordantly... he got Jenner's sword. Somehow.

I forgot to put this comment down. If they make a Mice Templar animated movie I think Daniel Radcliffe (the actor who played Harry Potter) should do the voice of Karic. That will be cool.

Did you ever read the book? Because the NIMH book messed me up as a kid! Very awesome piece of work. Very different from the animated movie, but I still like the movie despite the departures.

I DID read the book and remeber loving it! I actually rented the movie last year to see if it still held up and suprisingly it did. Hand-painted animation is still AMAZING to me

Sooo cute and awesome at the same time!

This is a fantastic piece, I can definitely see the influence of the Secret of NIMH. I was surprised at how well that movie held up with time. I thought it fantasy when I was a kid, only after seeing it about a year ago did I realize it was science fiction!

The mood is good and dank, threatening without being off-putting. I love it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to NickAlmand [2010-06-10 22:16:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it had to be dark. And you're right about NIMH - it's a great example of how sci-fi can look like fantasy if applied the right way to a suitably primitive culture. Like, say, MICE!

Wow that's awesome! Apparently I've been missing out by not keeping up with the series (I really enjoyed the first issue, but I had so many other titles to keep up with, this one got lost in the shuffle). But this may definitely push me to pick up the trades this weekend.

AdamWithers In reply to BrianManning [2010-06-09 15:32:48 +0000 UTC]

You HAVE been missing out! The first volume is really good, but the second volume amps things up by a factor of about x50. The last issue of volume 2 just came out, and man oh man am I ever anxious for the final part of the trilogy to begin.
