Description
This is a pin-up for the comic Mice Templar by Bryan J.L. Glass and Mike Oeming. To my delight, it was printed as the illustration that accompanied the Foreword on the second hardcover collection of the series. It was an honor to do, really. Templar is easily the best sword-swinging fantasy comic on the market right now, in my opinion. Definitely in my top-five favorite fantasy stories of all time. My love for this series is deep, and not just because Bryan is one of my very good friends.
When choosing an image to illustrate for the pin-up, it was an easy choice to go for "one-arm" Leito (my favorite character). As a bonus, the sequence where he leads the imprisoned mice on a revolt to attempt an escape from the dungeon was such a great, moody scene that it wasn't hard to find a dramatic shot to encapsulate it.
This is in my style, which is quite different from series artists Mike Oeming and Victor Santos. Having never done much work on mice, I looked back at my favorite mice movies ever: Great Mouse Detective and Secret of NIMH. The rest came out on the page. Hope you like it!

Sold! I'm hitting the comic store this weekend, and picking up as much as I can find. Again, this is an awesome piece, so thank you for inspiring me to get back into the series.

Yes this very much reminds me of those awesome movies Basil the Great Mouse Detective and Secret of NIMH. This looks to be a fairly interesting story I might take a look at it. Very nicely done.

This is awesome. I've actually never heard of the story, which is embarassing since I consider myself quite the fantasy afficionado! I'll have to check it out.
For me, while the mice are exceptional, the sword in the foreground steals the picture. It's very eye catching!

Thanks so much. The sword was a solid exercise in foreshortening, which I'm glad worked well. This thing lived or died by that sword - and how much it looked like Leito was struggling to keep it lifted off the ground.

It definitely worked. I'm going to have to check out that title, I think.
