Description This is just to give a bit of a helping hand for people who want to draw owls and want to clean up some common mistakes
I really can't stress this enough; OWLS DO NOT HAVE CROW FEET. So stop it. Just stop.
Also, many parrots have two talons x two talons and Ospreys and such.. so if you're planning on drawing ANY bird, make sure you check what their feet look like! ( Or I'll hunt you down and gut you like a fish D: )

No, there's no wings on this tutorial. Mainly because people seem to get so distracted by wings they screw up everything else. That and there's a bazillion wing tutorials out there.

A great study for helping advance owl studies is this:

Another great owl tutorial of course is this one: [link]

enjoy.

I have to tell you this: the second owl, the red one... It's just so sexy(?) (Sorry, I'm so sorry, but I had to)
Okay now, this is just beautiful! And very useful too: you pointed out the mistakes we have to avoid and you definitely saved me from those common anatomy errors! I didn't draw any owl yet, but now I have some idea of what to do.Β Again, thank you so much!

I knew about the foot thing (Thanks, Guardians of Ga'Hoole books!) but not that the two front-two back position was the default. Thank you!

Lol, the "common crimes" are found in disney-owls, the older the more "mistakes".
I think lots of artists gets inspired by disney and when they stick to this kind of style, the anatomy mistakes are part of this.

This is exactly what I needed! From the pictures I saw of snowy owls I thought they did have 3 digits in front, but now I can tell it's not the case. Wish I'd found this sooner!

AddictionHalfWay In reply to Dangeryena [2014-03-04 03:28:46 +0000 UTC]

They can position their talons as they require them for their situation. So you'll be able to find pictures of their talons either way so drawing them with "three in front" isn't wrong in the same way drawing a cat without its claws showing isn't wrong. It's situational

I did not know that about their feet! In pictures the only time you can clearly see the feet are of course when they are catching prey so I never noticed. thank You for this Tutorial! It will help me greatly I think!

Yeah @w@ If you really like owls you can go to places like County Fairs or Middle Ages Fairs and they'll usually have a bird-person there, they'll be able to show you more close up on the bird anatomy. Because I agree, even if you watch a documentary on birds/owls, you miss a lot of what's happening because of how they move.

lizz-elric In reply to AddictionHalfWay [2013-05-28 22:32:13 +0000 UTC]

There's not many fairs where I live that have a lot on birds. Nor are there many places close to me that have a lot of info I don't already know about raptors. :/ My State Fair might...but usually they have more exotic animals like tigers or lions instead of birds.
