Description Two quick feline anatomy tutorials I stuck together.

These two things are probably the most common anatomical mistakes I see in cat drawings o__o; Especially the chest.
Like honestly... Cats shouldn't be drawn like dogs (or plastic toys). Cats and dogs are built for two completely different hunting styles. And being a cartoonist or really "stylized" isn't an excuse for fucking anatomy up. So stop it, just stop it

Anyways, I hope it helps out at least a few people, so enjoy

Sadly, I have to disagree with the chest eithier. The cat's chest anatomy is a bit more complicated than to only-put-both-shoulders-together. Almost every cat has the same base-anatomy, no matter if lion, tiger, wildcat, housecat or lynx.Β  The fur only makes it look like the shoulders would be together, but in real the arms are seperated from each other, same as the Chest does not appear too far into the front.

here is the anatomy view:

terrible sight, but thats how livings look inside.

the same on big cats:

Hope it helps a little.

They're not saying that the rib cage isn't there, only that it's so minimal in appearance that you shouldn't draw it as if it was there.

actually, in certain poses i can disprove the chest idea.
let's look at some different pictures, shall we?
Β  Β  Β
notice the chest in all of these? it's for both hairless and furry cats. it's only in certain poses, like the one shown in the example of the journal, where the chest between the front legs is invisible.

Opiks In reply to Gi-Saggiomo [2014-08-20 10:20:31 +0000 UTC]

It depends on what you draw most of the time, for example, I spend half my days drawing felines (And watching feral-heart stuff) and the other half drawing equines and canines.

I hardly draw equines, so I find them much harder then felines.

Gi-Saggiomo In reply to Opiks [2014-08-22 00:35:28 +0000 UTC]

It makes sense I guess. I keep trying to draw cats, I think they did improve a bit, but They are so... Fluid... It's hard to understand their movement, I guess...

Any tutorial is made with the intent on teaching people something the artist is adamant about. That isn't art police, that's sharing knowledge and being confident about the knowledge and methods you have that got you to the point where you feel like making a tutorial. I believe you should "know the rules before you break them" AKA know what the animal you're drawing looks like before you decide whether or not that's how you actually want to draw it. That's a method I learned from Walt Disney while researching the production of Bambi. It's not about being a perfectionist, it's about not being ignorant about the creature you're portraying. I myself learn the animals I intend on drawing and then decide "nah, I'm going to draw this part this way and that part another way because that feels more fun to me!"Β

And most importantly if you don't like my method of doing cartoons. aka knowing the basics of the actual animal's anatomy before changing things up then believe it or not but I'm not God. I will not smite you for being a non-believer. It's a single tutorial made by a single artist for their single method of going about things. I don't care if you disagree with my point of view and draw things how you (or other artists) like to draw them. Just click "back" on your browser, go about your regular day and draw animals however you want to draw animals.
