Description Was curious how a Bird type would look if it basically replaced the Flying type.

Type match-ups would be identical to the Flying type, except resistance to Ground rather than immunity.

Instead of the Flying type, there would be an airborne mechanic.
Every PKMN species would be considered airborne or grounded. Based on that, those that qualify as airborne would be immune to ground-targeted move (note: not Ground-type moves), meaning they would avoid getting hit by Earthquake and Surf, but be vulnerable to Mud Shot for example.

I'm curious to hear your reasoning for adding Normal to Braviary and not say, Staraptor and Swellow.

I was pondering the idea of giving all of them Normal, for the sake of boosting the high base-power Normal moves they're known for spamming (Reckless Double Edge Staraptor, Facade-Sets with Swellow).
And Swellow has sort of been retconned to lean towards being a Sp.Attacker and user of Boomburst etc in the past few generations.... but basically, the reason Id din't give them all a Normal type was in order to have at least some pure Bird types on the selection.
And the reason I then did give it to just Braviary specifically... was just because I liked the idea of it serving as a counterpart to Mandibuzz. It wasn't a solid decision, and I'd easily be convinced to even give it the Fighting type instead xD

I definitely follow your logic now, and thanks for the in-depth response!

Bird was actually a planned type for gen 1, but they changed it to flying.

I don't think it was changed to Flying.

Yes there was a Bird type, just like there is a Bug type.

But it makes more sense if things like Pidgey were initially planned as Bird/Flying and then became Normal/Flying when they decided to scrap Bird.

Because that would explain why all birds have been Normal/Flying rather than having Flying as their primary or even as the only type.

Also, they probably had Flying as it's own thing simply cause gaining wings is sort of essential to one of the starters... and I doubt they would have considered Charizard as a Bird type at any point.

It's not really clear according to bulbapedia, so you could be right.

Well, I've wondered many times in the past 20 years why they keep making generic birds Normal/Flying insead of just Flying, or Flying/Normal... and once I heard that they had a Bird type in some point of development, it felt like an obvious explanation to me xD

Cause even if the Normal type is to represent that birds are pretty generic and plain, like rats and cats....it makes sense that they scrapped Bird because...it seemed too Normal to be its own type

With my Bird type concept, I went the other way for fun. scrapping Flying because of how it has been treated like a mechanic for ground-immunity more often than being teated like a proper elemental type, but instead getting the Bird type back, because we have plenty of "creature"-types anyway, and if Bugs make sense, then Birds could just as much. What is lost by doing that are the elemental wind aspects from the Flying type, but I have the Wind type to cover that

What would happen to levitate?
Is sirferch'd also bird type?

It would get replaced by other abilities.
Flygon would get Sandstream for example, Weezing would get some other Poison-related ability etc.
And sure, Sirfetch'd would be Bird/Fighting I suppose xD
